Now she is back with a new work entitled ‘Illuminated’ that features bright, glowing statements in nightly sceneries. It seems like she’s put neon-lit letters into the open landscape though it’s actually a digital manipulation that we’re looking at. The artist created a beautiful contrast between the harsh words and the peaceful, nocturnal landscape, making it seem like hard reality is lighting our way.

Instead of offering a moralized comparison, lauding the natural and condemning the artificial, DeMarte presents the strange beauty both have to offer. He says: “I represent the natural world through completely unnatural elements to speak metaphorically and symbolically of our mental separation from what is ‘real’.”

Inspired by the mysterious stories that evolve around the ‘burned-over district’ of upstate New York, Amelia used artificial lighting to act as an outside force on the landscape. The territory was the birthplace of several early American religious and occult groups. The photographs reveal something felt but not seen about these forests, as though the land itself holds a presence we seek to uncover but fear revealing entirely.

Her series ‘Metallurgy’, features landscapes around Cape Town, South Africa (her place of birth and current base) and uses mirrors to create juxtaposing portals of warped light – resulting in the beautiful and surreal images of the collection.
When asked about how she creates this unique and eerie viewing experience, she replies: ‘The idea was to highlight the loneliness of the landscapes by establishing the mirror-portals as separate, almost sentient, entities and placing them to hover in isolation, as though forever experiencing an alternate perspective’

In her ‘Response’ series, she treats photographs as both representations and tangible objects, touching on the possibilities of realist representation, referentiality, and the photograph-as-thing. ‘My process unfolds through observation and experimentation; I let the image and its materiality dictate its direction. Playing with paper and light in unplanned and organic ways, I look for new ways to perceive space, form, and context of my subjects.’ she explains.

Multimedia artist Reynald Drouhin’s revises crystal clear landscapes in his series ‘Landscape Monolith’, by turning sections of the land upside-down. By placing odd shapes directly in the center of the horizon he creates a window into a distinct, new place that matchlessly blends with the surrounding environment.

The intense colors and almost clear-cut lines of nature create abstract scenes. Drouhin doesn’t only work on dedicated spaces but apprehends alternately different possibilities, in that way trying to reveal something else than the ‘visible’ such a parallel space, ghostlike, strange, or resulting from coded data.

Montreal-based photographer Benoit Paillé created the series ‘Alternative Landscapes’ due to the need of something else, because he actually hates landscapes. Thus he decided to stage his own vision of landscape and created an art installation where he lit various outdoor locations with a glowing little light square. By the way: the pictures aren’t photoshopped: Paillé suspended a 1×1 m cube for his beautiful illumination that have kind of a poetic space and time purpose.
