In joyful expectation of the first snow we’re sharing this piece by Sonja Hinrichsen entitled ‘We Are The Water’. The Oakland-based artist is best known for her immersive snow drawings that she usually creates with the help of a few volunteers. The pictured series aims to recreate the original flow of the Yampa River and its 4 main tributaries.

The river is now dammed and the valley is filled with water. In a 4-hour effort the groups of volunteers walked across the lake on snowshoes to create a pattern of a general stream as well as paying tribute to the moods of water, as its flow may be slow or fast, rough or smooth, straight or meandering, whirling in circles and racing down rapids. The piece was photographed from an airplane the day after the event.

London-based artist Jonty Hurwitz has created the smallest known, human-shaped sculptures in the world that’s completely invisible to the human eye. The nano sculptures span about the same scale as a sperm, and can only be perceived on the screen of powerful scanning electron microscope. The artist placed them on a human hair or the head of an ant. When asked how we can even be sure that the sculpture really exists, Hurwitz replies: “Your only way to engage with it is through a screen, and a mouse separating you and the art via a vacuum and a series of mathematically mind-blowing quantum processes that shower the art with particles to map its contours.”

Jonty Hurwitz is well-known for his artworks using technology and science in relationship to creativity and craftsmanship, we’ve featured him previously with his mind-blowing Anamorphic Sculptures.

Artist Kendal Murray builds miniature mixed-media sculptures that take viewers on a playful and imaginative journey. She is using tiny toy figures and objects to create small worlds filled with creative memories, daydreams, and fantasies. The scenes are taking place on unexpected objects like on top of a small purse, or on one side of a compact mirror.

The artist states: “The idea of creating these miniature works came from dream states and how we are able to play with our own identity, to play with different roles we take on in our dream state. So the miniature works serve as a metaphor for intuitive thoughts.”

Photographer Bernhard Lang, whose work we featured previously went on vacation at a seaside resort in Adria, Italy a few years ago where he was struck by the perfectly uniform arrangements of colored umbrellas used by each hotel. Last month he returned, this time by air, and shot for several hours on the coastline between Ravenna and Rimini. Although the view is rather unsettling when you are stuck between all the vacationers and umbrellas at the beach, the patterns they create when looking from above are quite mesmerizing.

In her work ‘Portable City’, artist Yin Xiuzhen collects clothes worn by people in different cities and uses them to create miniature models of them inside a suitcase. To provide the viewer with the whole experience, the suitcase also plays a tape with the local soundscape.

In times where many people are traveling on a regular basis, being at home everywhere and nowhere, the project is an interesting attempt towards the thought of ‘living out of one’s suitcase’ and the actual loss of our local identity and culture.

Tom Blachford is giving us a stunning view on his hometown Melbourne. Known for his minimalistic style and clean aesthetic with a penchant for architecture and a mirroring app, he recently shot these pictures from an open-door helicopter.
The result makes us a little jealous as it looks quite great to live in such a beautiful town that offers lots of amazing activities or as Tom Blachford puts it : “The combination of nightlife, picnics, café culture, days at the beach and moonlight cinemas makes it hard to beat.”

Probably most of you are meanwhile familiar with Isaac Cordal’s miniature works that inspired many others to follow. We first introduced him in 2011 and thought it was time to re-visit his side and provide you with a little update of his latest works.

With the simple act of miniaturization and thoughtful placement, Isaac Cordal magically expands the imagination of pedestrians finding his sculptures on the street. The art work intends to catch the attention on our devalued relation with the nature through a critical look to the collateral effects of our evolution.
Isaac Cordal is sympathetic toward his little people and you can empathize with their situations, their leisure time, their waiting for buses and even their more tragic moments such as accidental death, suicide or family funerals.

The sculptures can be found in gutters, on top of buildings, on top of bus shelters; in many unusual and unlikely places in Barcelona, Nantes, Brussels, Berlin, London and many more, so keep your eyes open, you might just spot one.

New Jersey-based street artist Joe Iurato proves that bigger isn’t always better with his small wooden figures that are cut out and painted, placed in public places such as busy intersections, street lamps, and the sides of buildings.

Sharp-eyed passersby can spot fun scenes of the tiny adventurers interacting with the world around them, whether they’re skateboarding over a soda can, fishing in a puddle, or climbing a brick wall. Iurato says: “One of the elements that I love about doing these smaller pieces is the surprise factor. You might see it. You might not. If you do, though, it’s not something that grabbed you from across the street like a massive 40’ mural would. Chances are you caught it from the corner of your eye just a few feet away, and the connection made is intimate.”

Marc Giai-Miniet’s works are reminiscent to the paper theater from ‘pictorial broadsheet’ culture of the 19th Century during the Biedermeier period. On several floors we can discover rather gloomy rooms, similar to laboratories in which whole miniature libraries are built Marc Giai-Miniet invites us on a journey through fictional attics, library rooms, past dusty corners and huge translucent shelves into a basement and machinery spaces. He creates images in which you suddenly believe to hear the sound of a constantly dripping faucet and echoing steps. With ‘Boxes’ the French artist takes us to empty spaces where unknown events have taken place. Initially Marc Giai-Miniets ‘Boxes’ contain small characters and grim scenes. Over time, they have been replaced by books, laboratories, storage areas and interrogation cells.

Marcus Beck and Simon Macro are Freshwest, a design firm based in Pembrokeshire West Wales, which embraces both experimental and functional design and is driven by their desire to realize ideas. Having know each other since their childhood days and sharing the same design ideals Marcus and Simon combined to establish Freshwest in 2005.

You can see their fun for design in their newly designed ‘Pool Table’. It’s an unexpected change of the game of billiards into a small body of standing water. The Table is formed out of 50mm of thick blue acrylic that distorts light, giving the illusion of an actual swimming pool. A stainless steel base provides support for the tabletop with a miniature diving board at the edge. This very basic piece of furniture was recreated in a playful way and one might like to take a swim after having a coffee. They state ‘Playing with scale, the miniature diving board seems to transform the solid surface of the acrylic into the serenity of still water’.
