In her series Personal Projects Peruvian photographer Daniela Muttini depicts the female body in existential situations. Most of the photos play up the contrast between the beauty of the models, bright colors, or spectacular backgrounds and the cruel stories the pictures are intended to tell: Naked bodies covered in tulle, a huddled woman alone in the desert, a pink gun, pink blood.

Dutch photographer Viviane Sassen is one of the rare artists who moves between the two worlds of fashion and art. Spending three years of her childhood in a village in Kenya has given her a special and original eye for fashion photography. Alongside her independent work, Sassen is mostly famous for her innovative work with fashion, making campaigns for Miu Miu, Stella McCartney and Louis Vuitton. Sassen`s fashion photography is marked by strength and surrealism, created in close collaboration with a team of stylists, art directors, models and make-up artists. Using graphic shadows and vivid colors, Sassen fabricates images full of symbols and ambiguity. She hides faces in deep shadows or turns them away which allows the viewer to identify with the subject and visualize their own narrative. By showing manipulating and shaping bodies, overlapping limbs and waving hair, Sassen acts like a sculptor using photography as her medium.

“I want to seduce the viewer with a beautiful formal approach and then at the same time, leave something disturbing.”

Coming from South Korea, Choi Xooang has been sculptig for almost 14 years now. Introduced to sculpture in an art school, he was immediately struck by the medium and the possibility of creating an actual and tangible object. Both fascinating and disturbing, Xooang’s figures show his concerns about human condition in the society. Although the intricate details make them as hyperrealistic as the works of Ron Mueck, Xooang’s sculptures are often surreal at the same time, having their bodies disorted or merged with other species. Open for numerous interpretations, they leave the viewer with unsettling feelings. But as the Korean artist said in a recent interview with Yatzer, “If one feels uncomfortable physically or mentally when viewing my work, I would say it worked.”

Designer Louisa Zahareas‘ surrealist tea set, titled ‘Screen Mutations‘, appears decidedly off-kilter when viewed in reality. Take another look through the screen of a Skype session, and the tableware looks normal. To reinvent a key family ritual for the age of digital communication, the designer worked with computational geometry expert, Dianne Hansford, who employed the technique of forced perspective in the creation of her surrealist porcelain pieces. Says Zaharea of the idea behind the project, “I wanted it to be humorous and light, but at the same time point to a real issue. How far are we willing to go to distort physical reality with how we are presenting ourselves on the web?”

On the inspiration behind the project, Lagarde says: “That story began in spring 2012 when I went back to a small hotel and restaurant in a village in Corrèze, which was closed for several years. The characters took shape one after another, settled in these rooms, in the dining room, at the bar. Gradually, they were fixed on the silver film.” Recently, the series was published in a book.
