In Seoul, Cov Studio has designed ‘SpaceDog’, a fantasy-driven hospitality venue that is inspired by the visual elements of a space station. The theater, café, studio, and rooftop terrace is based on the theme of an emergency landing on Earth, and is demonstrative of Seoul’s forward-thinking and creative design scene.

A kilometer of steel corridors were constructed to form a mechanical-looking maze at a former coal mine in the industrial city of Genk in Belgium. Titled ‘Labyrinth’, the installation was created to be a spatial experience by Gijs Van Vaerenbergh, a collaboration between Belgian architects Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh.

Alex Seton’s Cargo, Hand-Carved Marble Bales With A Political Connotation

The new exhibition by Australian artist Alex Seton is titled ‘Cargo’, featuring marble installation sculptures that depict compressed bales of clothing in asymmetric stainless steel plates. The installation speaks to our own complicity in the clothing industry and its metaphoric representation of the economic systems that structure our world.

Seton uses his own clothes to create a series of tightly compressed soft clothing bales. The piles of fabric are rendered in marble and stacked upon each other to look like building blocks. They are then arranged in square chiral patterns, alternating in layers on each palate. The installation aims to show how much impact one person’s collection of clothing has, both on a personal and political level. “I’m interested in the identities we have, the clothing we’ve worn throughout our lives and the many different roles we’ve worn within those clothes”, explains Seton. He is also fascinated by the idea of journey. “We have all lived many different lives”, he continues, “And we are all hoping to evolve and change into something better”. Each compressed bale works as an art piece to evoke a tangled mass of humanity; the condensing of human needs and social concerns, as well as the broader environments and cultures that connect us all.

Nostalgia By Studio Sanna Völker

Swedish-born interior designer Sanna Völker has created ‘Nostalgia’: a set of chic candle holders that explore the senses by working both as vessels for intimate lighting, and as natural aroma diffusers.

Designed as part of ‘Perception’, an exhibition curated for Barcelona Design Week, ‘Nostalgia’ consists of two welded steel candle holders. One uses a volcanic rock with essential oil that is warmed by the heat of the candle to become a diffuser, and the other heats up a cup that you can fill with water, herbs, eucalyptus, or any other combination at your disposal, to create a gentle steam and scent. “Smell is closely linked with memory and works as a trigger for us to recall certain moments and places”, explains Völker. “With ‘Nostalgia’, fond memories will be awakened or new ones created. The combinations [of scents] are endless and so are the occasions we want to remember.”
