In this series of disarming black and white self-portraits, English photographer Tom Butler contorts his body, holding elegant poses that show only the top of his head.

The series reads like a contemporary dance piece; Butler’s body casting shapes that confuse and intrigue — his bald head the small, ever-present reminder that the contortionist is indeed a person and not some kind of arachnid sculpture. In an interview with GUP Magazine, Butler explained the premise of his portrait series as follows: “I attempt to reduce myself as much as possible to a singular form. Instead of presenting myself in a recognizable way, I appear concealed, ambiguous or even monstrous.”

For his unique artwork titled ‘We Come As We Are’, Madrid-based Venezuelan artist Luigi Rodriguez has created a hyperrealistic sculpture of his own face during orgasm. The artist has always been intrigued by orgasms, so he decided to study his own sexual climax. For his project, Rodriguez had to step away from his comfort zone to try and understand more about his own individual. Creating this sculpture has been a great journey of self-discovery, preparing himself both physically and mentally. The artist is fascinated by those few powerful seconds during orgasm, when we lose ourselves and remove all layers of fear, judgment and ego, revealing a face that represents who we are in the most pure state. He believes that the face we reveal during sexual climax represents our true identity, allowing us to be free and uncover a face that is pure. This art piece was the one that Luigi feared the most. He decided to make a hyperrealist sculpture of himself because he wanted the artwork to be as close to reality as possible.

For her project ‘Pretty, Please’, photographer Allison Morris took a series of self-portraits depicting a woman’s beauty in an absurd way. From a ponytail covering her face to clothespins pinned onto her skin, Morris captures herself in vibrant and splashy surroundings, with a satirical touch. According to the photographer, the aim was to display “the absurd notion of the ideal female, in continuation of a key theme running throughout her practice.

In a statement about the project, Morris says: “This series of photographic self-portraits intends to emphasize and question the outlandish and nonsensical nature of ‘feminine’ objects and traditions – everything from hairstyles to body modification – the purpose of which is to shape and alter the authentic female form, and maintain a firm grasp on an otherwise fleeting youth.”
