Artist Gary Schlingheider focuses on reduction and simplification of familiar shapes using different materials with various techniques. The core of his latest work “30mm“ is the relation between color, form and space symbolized through objects made of pure steel. Seemingly everyday things were a starting point. Later, the artist isolated these studies from their old belongings and contexts. Emotional attachment, function, consistency – nothing of that sort counts anymore. Instead, the viewer gets the chance of interpreting outlines, recognizing real objects and making new connections with the artworks. Schlingheider waived extravagant coloring of the steel shapes to increase the level of abstraction. Thus the focus lies on the aesthetic dimensions of the forms and their peripheral area. Schlingheider studied fine art and graduated from the Berlin University of the Art. He is part of a group exhibition where the university shows artworks of graduates and master-class students.

From February 15-21 visitors can see his works in Quergalerie, Hardenbergstraße 33, 10623 Berlin.

Born in Padua, Italy, in 1960 the artist Maurizio Cattelan is best known for his satirical and hyperrealistic sculptures. His source themes range widely from popular culture, history, and organized religion to a meditation on the self, characterized by humour and profoundness. Cattelan creates confusing veristic sculptures that reveal inconsistencies at the core of today’s society. His work is deadly serious in its scathing critique of authority and the abuse of power. Cattelan has openly thematized historical narratives and public figures. His art work “La Nona Ora” (1999) shows a wax replica of Pope John Paul II, slayed by a meteor and pinned to a red carpet. “Him” (2001) is a small simulation of Adolph Hitler, kneeling on the floor, represented as a prayer. In the more reverent and mournful piece titled “All” (2007), a series of marble sculptures, figured as dead bodies covered in sheets, are placed lined up on the gallery floor. Cattelan is seen by many art historians as one of Duchamp’s greatest contemporary successor, emulating morbidly humorous replicas on objects.

Brazilian artist Tatiana Blass integrates a variety of media in her masterpieces, including painting, sculpture, installation and video. Blass has been exhibiting regularly in art salons and studio shows in Brazil and abroad since 1998, when she started her career. Titled “Tails”, her installation from 2006 shows several wooden chairs and other sculptural objects that seem to melt into the ground. The art objects merge with the floor through additions of specifically cut lacquered wood or fiberglass. Blass works with pictorial sculptures of pieces of furniture and balls that extend into shapes with curving outlines. Solid forms pretend both brightly colored and woodgrain patterned liquid. The sculptures are spreading out on the floor as they were melting, in a transformation of the three-dimensional objects. The Brazilian artist is represented by Galeria Millan in Sao Paulo.

LA-based artist and prop builder Jedediah Corwyn Voltz created a range of miniature treehouses for succulents, cacti and bonsai trees. Entitled ‘Somewhere Small’, the series began as a side project – a way of using scrap wood, fabrics and other materials left over from Voltz’s building of miniatures for stop motion films. Now the project has taken on a life of its own, the artist states that he tries to “build structures that compliment the plant they’re living in, and grow with them.” Hand-made pottery, rugs, furniture and sculptures, as well as semi-precious stones, complement the houses to create a tiny world in each plant. “This is my way of bringing my love of geology into my work just a little bit.” Voltz says.

Artist Matthew Simmonds creates miniature sculptures that are meticulously carved out of stone and marble. As a trained stonemason, Simmonds focuses on architectural stone carving with a special interest in sacred architecture. His small-scale artworks are self-described ‘internal worlds’ and each one of the pieces explores themes such as the play of light and shadow as well as the relationship between nature and human achievement. Before shifting to creating miniature sculptures, Simmonds has worked on the restoration of Westminster Abbey, among other projects. Simmonds is currently living and working in Copenhagen and his work is exhibited internationally.

In a statement about his artworks, Simmonds says: “I feel that being trained initially as a stonemason rather than as a sculptor gave me a very direct connection to the material I am working in and a strong sense of discipline, while studying history of art has given me a more profound understanding of the buildings I am inspired by than if I had trained as an artist.”

Rotterdam-based designer Sabine Marcelis created ‘Dawn Lights‘, a series of neon sculptures playing on the relationship between light, color, saturation and transparency. The ‘Dawn Lights’ were created as an exclusive commission for Victor Hunt Designart Dealer, and form part of a larger set of light works entitled Voie Light Series. Each Dawn Light is formed from a white neon tube in tinted cast resin. Speaking of her motivation behind the work, Marcelis says she was inspired by “A time in the day where the sun, clouds and sky join to create a momentary riot of hues.” For more lighting products, take a look at our shop.
