From the outside, the building has an industrial appearance, however, once inside, the interiors give off a completely different feeling. The interiors feature warm materials – mainly wood – creating a cosy atmosphere. Raumlabor worked with a team of local residents to ensure that the public building would serve the needs of the people using it.

]]> The students from The Scarcity and Creativity Studio at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design created a seaside sauna that stretches over the cliffs into the North Sea. ‘The Bands’ is situated in Kleivan, Norway, an abandoned fishing village north of the Polar Circle. The design and building process of the sauna is part of a conversion plan of the quay and a renovation of its existing buildings from the early 1900s: a fisherman’s cottage, a cod liver oil production building and a cod salting building. The sauna itself is constructed of wooden bands and includes a wood-burning stove, a sunken hot tub and a terrace offering stunning views over the Norwegian landscape.

]]> Perched at the north-west edge of a private island close to Toronto, the Grotto Sauna by Partisans is a sculpted space that was modeled using a state of the art 3-D technology.
The architects took the challenge to create a free-standing structure that not only respected, but also matured from the context. The selected concept prescribes a solid, simple presence on the exterior, while the interior follows dynamic air movements in curvature forms; requiring design solutions.

]]> Modulorbeat created a ‘One Man Sauna’ in Bochum on an abandoned factory site. It consists of a tower of 7,5 metres height made of stacked pre-cast concrete parts, which were originally used for building shafts, housing a one-man sauna. The structure is divided into super-imposed functional layers: a plunge pool below, the sauna on the medium level and a relaxation room with a view of the sky on top. Vertical ladders link the three floors.
