Photographer Tobias Faisst dedicates himself to hyperrealism by depicting objects in high resolution. His pictures are so sharp and intense, it almost hurts the eye. “I create photos in abeyance between illusion and reality”, says the photographer. Through his work, he glorifies technological progress, which he calls ‘Tech-Aesthetics’. In his photographs, everything melts to a digital matrix that depicts an exaggerated image of the present. Simultaneously, Faisst gives us a hint of his perspective on what the future will look like: How can we differentiate between „real” photography and computer-generated images? What do we even mean by reality? As the world and the technological possibilities change with rapid speed, Faisst highlights the importance of the relationship between humans and machines. In his future vision, they’ll merge and build a unit.

He states: “Where I choose to apply paint thickly or turn form using a particular hue, are as intrinsic to the expressive nature of painting as the selection of a particular word is to a poet. To extend the metaphor; as in poetry, it is not the correct selection of words, as much as it is their ability to co-exist harmoniously with both a semblance of reality and the artists sentiments on the world – or in my case – the sitter present.”

Marta Penter is an artist based in Porto Alegre, south of Brazil. She is deeply interested in human connections, and particularly in the idea of intimacy; she chooses her subjects with an anthropological eye. In her paintings, subtle expressions of body language convey entire personal histories and relationships.

As to why she makes her paintings so enormous, Penter says: “When you have a large image, it causes you to become a part of the painting much quicker than if it were to be smaller.” This tactic is especially valuable for a series like this one that focuses on the theme of intimacy.

Artist Joshua Suda creates amazingly real paintings. He’s armed with a drive to create and apparently a lot of patience and a steady hand. For him it is rather meditation to create his large scale body of works which are often up to 4 meters high.

Suda explains: “Sometimes I praise it, sometimes it’s my scapegoat. It’s a yin and yang thing going on. Whatever it is, there is this drive to get the cerebral into the physical without the ultimate concept ever fully unveiled; and that is why I paint. I’m like a dog chasing a ball but the difference between the dog and I; is that I never catch the damn ball!”

Jantina Peperkamp is a self-taught artist from Holland, painting incredibly realistic portraits. In her works the final result is established by the energy that arises between the artist and the model. Jantina Peperkamp rather sees herself as an observer who tries to recognize herself in her models to ultimately create a self-portrait.

Describing her creative process she explains: ‘A photo shoot takes place. After that a sketch is made, which is very detailed. I put this sketch on a wooden panel. The painting is made with very many thin layers of acrylic paint. Every layer is more detailed. The effect is a very realistic portrait with his own identity. The unusual way my work is cut out makes it even more recognizable. All the unnecessary is stripped of with the intention to maintain only the essential.’
