With Architectural Digest, we visited photographer Hartwig Klappert in his 600-square-meter studio that was formerly a factory. Built on a tiny island at Nonnendamm, Klappert’s studio is in the midst of Berlin—but still entirely secluded. The city, Klappert explains, built a bridge to the island just for him and the other artists residing in the building. It is so secluded that even though he has been working there for over 30 years, the mail often doesn’t find its way to his letterbox.

The sun has already set, yet you are still hoping for warmth. I am there, taking off my glasses and you go “whooo-hoo” like a siren, rubbing your eyes, rubbing your chin. Later in the kitchen we are swallowing “Hot Love” while I am thinking; “boy, I am freezing”. I want to throw up, like in Spain, to throw up and not having to think of anything but, never again. In bed you are lying all stiff and all so cold. You say: I am freezing. And I say: Why don’t you go out.

Jimmy Choo was named by Rafael’s ex-wife, who was a stylist and loved the brand’s footwear. After their divorce, Mantesso wanted to fill the empty spaces of their house by creating some fictional scenes. And since Jimmy Choo was always around to watch him draw, he thought it was natural to include him into his artworks. He aims to post a new photo of his works on Instagram everyday, he mainly finds inspirations by observing his surroundings.

20-year-old Paris-based photographer Sidi-Omar Alami decided to leave his country after he spent one year in medicine school to explore the world with just his backpack and his camera. He states: “It was hard to make this choice, to leave my family, my friends, my comfort, but I made it because in my heart it was the good choice, and today after one year of travel I realized that it was the best choice I made in my life.

I decided to start my journey in June 2014. My first destination was the United States. My plan was to go to the US for three months. Upon arrival in the US, I didn’t know I was going on a road trip. I stayed one month in New York City (two weeks in Brooklyn) and two weeks in an apartment in Manhattan. Before I came to NYC I didn’t know anybody, and when you are somewhere alone without your friends and your family, you feel the needs to speak with new people and make new friends. One night during the world cup I met a French trader in a bar in Manhattan. Before I met him, I had no apartment, and he offered to host me for two weeks in a wonderful apartment in Broadway.

After a few days, I met a photographer in NYC and a French musician. The three of us decided to buy a cheap vintage car (Buick 1993) and go on a road trip through the US. We started in NYC, drove to Los Angeles through the northern roads and back to NYC via the southern roads. We met so many people, it was awesome. We traveled more than 10 000 miles (16 000 km) through the US and we crossed more than 20 states. It was an incredible adventure, we slept outside in the fields, in deserted areas and out in the woods. It was fun to take showers in the lake. After this huge road trip I traveled to Hawaii by myself. Now I’m on the road again, I’ve been to Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonésia, Qatar, Iceland, Sweden, Morocco, Switzerland, Canada, Norway. Today and thanks to my travels, I understand more about myself and I try to make people happy through my photos. Through my photos I’d like to encourage people to travel.”

Photographer Frederik Vercruysse created the series ‘Tempo Polveroso’ while participating an ‘artist in residency’ project in Villa Lena, Tuscany. Initially he planed to photograph a new series of still lifes during his stay though he soon felt compelled to capture his inspirational surroundings in images rather than remain within the four walls of his studio.

His photographs of marble quarries evoke a sense of beauty, while concurrently imbued with a melancholy sprit; the creation of beauty at the expense of nature. Without the inclusion of any human figures, it is impossible to fathom the larger-than-life scale of this totally unique form of landscape architecture. This has produced some abstract and picturesque images. The artist’s work – five editions per work of art – and an exhibition booklet was just exhibited at Graanmarkt 13.

When and where did you take the picture? Tell us a little about the idea behind it.

I took this photo not too long after I first started Instagram in 2012. One weekend afternoon I was having a slow day bathing with a bath bomb in, and casually snapped the photo thinking it might make an interesting image.

Turns out to be my favourite picture even after years!

Where are you from? How does that place influence the way you photograph?

I was born in Japan, but moved to Southeast Asia before I turned 1 and I had been raised in Kuala Lumpur until very recently I started working in Tokyo.

I find just any place fun to shoot – whether I’m at a beach or in concrete jungle, I can find something that intrigues me. That could be from my multicultural background, perhaps?

Who and what are the things that inspire you?

Shapes and lines always draw my attention, but what’s really keeping me to shoot is the Instagram community – every person I meet via the app is so enthusiastic about photography, that I always have something to learn and be inspired from.

Your favorite Instagrammers?

@seis.dobleu, @maralazaridou, @drcuerda and @erobyn

Which Apps do you use to edit your pictures?

Snapseed, Instagram

Tell us a little about your everyday. (Family, friends, work, etc.)

I do graphic design. I moved to Tokyo early this year for work and been loving it. This year’s goal (though it’s already June) is to explore this country more. So much in my to-go list :)

Photographer Jimmy Nelson spent three years visiting more than 35 groups, tribes and people of indigenous cultures all around the world to create his series ‘Before They Pass Away’. His aim was to capture portraits of the disappearing people groups and to preserve glimpses of their rites, customs, and traditions.

The resulting images are hauntingly beautiful, offering a rare insight into a world seemingly far away from the one we live in where it’s all about the latest sneaker release, the biggest car and a well filled bank account. The photographer states: “There is no sociology, no statistics. It’s how I see the world. I am aiming to document the variety and importance of what is left of indigenous culture. Yes, it’s idealistic. Indigenous peoples are usually portrayed as impoverished. But they have a wealth and a pride. It’s not only about material possessions. I shoot from a very personal, aesthetic point of view. Different people can interpret what they like.”

You can follow Jimmy Nelson via Instagram, check out his latest TED talk or purchase the book ‘Before They Pass Away’ here.

You are there – You are there, when the great spotted woodpecker are sitting in the chestnut trees, knocking ten to fifteen times for love, their wings clamp with a width between 34 to 39 cm. You are there when they leave tiny traces in the snow and I follow them, in hopes of losing you. You are there when they tuck their heads under their wings and fall sleep unkissed. But you are not there, when I myself feel like one of these woodpecker, small and unkissed, only not so spotted.

The Japanese are well-known for making efficient use of small living areas, a necessity of their high population density. Photographer Won Kim took that as an inspiration to create the series ‘Living Close’, showing the residents of what is best described as a guesthouse for backpackers in Tokyo.

The photographer states: “Some of the people in these images stay at the facility for a relatively short time, for other residents these tiny cubicles are essentially permanent homes.
For me, the real interest of the resulting portraits is in how each resident has made use of a such a small, confining space. The sharply-defined space and its contents tell something about its occupant’s personality, and his or her ability to function in such a strange, enclosed environment.”
