Norwegian visual artist Andreas Lie blurs the boundary between the beautiful wilderness of Norway and the people who call it home, creating subtle double exposure portraits. Inspired by the surroundings of his hometown Bergen, Norway, landscapes filled with water, snowy mountains, the Northern Lights, or the deep forests. These beautiful portraits generate a peaceful visual faculty, capturing an understanding and longing sense of home and identity. The minimalistic artwork was inspired by his desire to produce something unexpected, creating portraits with just droplets of ink. Lie prefers his double exposure work to be as simple as possible working frequently with the colors black and white.

Born in Seoul, South Korea, and grown up in the USA, the artist So Yoon Lym painted incredibly realistic, braided hairstyles for her series titled “The Dreamtime”.

The art project is inspired by the aboriginal stories and the history of origins. Fascinated by braided hairstyles, So Yoon Lym painted twenty of the realistic black and white portraits. Each braided pattern is a map of the ancient universe like valleys, mountains, forests, oceans, rivers and streams. These braided patterns are the language for the new aboriginal, and encourages viewers to change the way they look at the world. So Yoon Lym believes that her paintings represent a human connection, a lifeline that connects different generations of people who have practiced the same ritual.

Artist Amy Park captures the distinct architecture of New York City through watercolor paintings. Whether it’s the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building or Lower Manhattan, Park is able to portray the city from a unique point of view through repetitive pencil marks and precise watercolor strokes. During a flight down the Hudson River in her family’s 40-year-old private plane, she was able to experience the city among the skyscrapers while taking hundreds of photos at flight speed that would later turn into the idea of using watercolors. In a city of constant change, the large scale paintings document New York City’s ongoing transformation.

Marc Dennis creates hyperrealistic paintings that are centered around the act of looking. Marc heightens a voyeuristic experience, suggesting a typical human behavior. His actors stand, peek, gaze and stare at that art that’s unfolding before them, transforming the viewer into an active part of the painting itself. The spectator becomes a participant in the pseudo-narrative and thus the meaning of the piece.

Marc Dennis explains: “The idea of a painting within a painting affords me lots of creative room to play, to present staged encounters, and conceptual paradox. I’ve always been intrigued with the visual manipulation of space and creating a psychic and erotic tension in my works.” For a detailed interview with the American artist, click here.
