Jono Williams designed and built The Skysphere, a modern version of the tree house. Located in Linton, New Zealand, the designer calls it ‘not the ordinary tree house’ since his construction not only features a 360-degree window, but can be set up virtually anywhere. Its main characteristic is the futuristic-looking shape of the 33-foot tall tower and includes features such as a fingerprint entry motorized door, high-speed internet, a rooftop stargazing platform as well as neon lighting at night. According to Jono Williams, who has a degree in computer graphic design, the building is entirely controlled via smartphone and powered solely by the sun. The whole building project cost him $50,000 and took him 3000 hours to complete. The process is documented on his blog.

For longtime readers of this very site, the name of Foster Huntington might already sound familiar. He was featured as one of the Top 10 Road Trip Photographers as well as with his projects The Burning House and A Restless Transplant. Now, he embarked on a new adventure together with some friends: he built a tree house in Washington State near Oregon and called it ‘The Cinder Cone’.

He says about his motivation that he was “inspired by the people and places I’d seen during my time on the road”. In addition to the stunning view over the valley, there’s also an outdoor bathtub and a skate bowl – a childhood dream come true. While some of his friends had already worked as carpenters professionally, a lot of things were also learned on the go. Documented on thousands of photos, the two treehouses are connected through a 25-foot-long bridge and the interior is rustic, yet minimalistic.

Thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, the whole process of building a treehouse is also documented in a book which is available to preorder here.

Architect Peter Bahouth built a series of houses in the trees connected by wooden bridges in Atlanta. Inspired by his love for nature and his childhood memories of boyhood treehouses, environmentalist Peter Bahouth created this grown-up fort in his Atlanta backyard. The three rooms of this treehouse have been named ‘Mind,’ ‘Body’ and ‘Spirit’ by its owner. A suspension bridge connects the living room to the bedroom that includes a platform bed which slides out for a better view of the tree canopy.
