LA-based artist and prop builder Jedediah Corwyn Voltz created a range of miniature treehouses for succulents, cacti and bonsai trees. Entitled ‘Somewhere Small’, the series began as a side project – a way of using scrap wood, fabrics and other materials left over from Voltz’s building of miniatures for stop motion films. Now the project has taken on a life of its own, the artist states that he tries to “build structures that compliment the plant they’re living in, and grow with them.” Hand-made pottery, rugs, furniture and sculptures, as well as semi-precious stones, complement the houses to create a tiny world in each plant. “This is my way of bringing my love of geology into my work just a little bit.” Voltz says.

Artist Matthew Simmonds creates miniature sculptures that are meticulously carved out of stone and marble. As a trained stonemason, Simmonds focuses on architectural stone carving with a special interest in sacred architecture. His small-scale artworks are self-described ‘internal worlds’ and each one of the pieces explores themes such as the play of light and shadow as well as the relationship between nature and human achievement. Before shifting to creating miniature sculptures, Simmonds has worked on the restoration of Westminster Abbey, among other projects. Simmonds is currently living and working in Copenhagen and his work is exhibited internationally.

In a statement about his artworks, Simmonds says: “I feel that being trained initially as a stonemason rather than as a sculptor gave me a very direct connection to the material I am working in and a strong sense of discipline, while studying history of art has given me a more profound understanding of the buildings I am inspired by than if I had trained as an artist.”

The powerful hyperreal pieces seem to illustrate scenes that comment on the corporate and political environment with a satirical touch. We’ve featured his installations before. In a statement about his work, which he refers to as ‘Cement Eclipses’, Cordal explains: “‘Cement Eclipses’ is a critical definition of our behavior as a social mass. The artwork intends to catch the attention of our devalued relation with the nature through a critical look to the collateral effects of our evolution.”

Since 2011, Japanese art director and designer Tatsuya Tanaka has been creating playful and intricate miniature dioramas as part of his ‘miniature calendar‘ project. Initially, it started as a way to document Tanaka’s collection of diorama dolls, but became a long-term project when an Instagram commenter suggested he create a scene everyday. In an interview about the themes explored in the project, Tanaka says: “The theme is ‘the interest of likening one thing to another’. In doing so, you can see how everyday things can become more fun when imagined in a different way.”

Artist Drew Leshko creates miniature neighborhood buildings made of wood and paper in his series ‘Relics’. Based in Philadelphia, his work is inspired by the transitions within his own surroundings. Through recreating buildings at a 1:12 scale, the personal perspective into these changing neighborhoods explores the topics of gentrification and history. In this way, Leshko puts the focus on individual buildings in a state of decay that will eventually be redeveloped. By documenting every unique detail in these miniature sculptures, his goal is to preserve their past through an ‘archive of buildings’.

‘When approaching a city it appears as a colossal structure in the landscape. And it is. Skyscrapers stand above you, and people are moving swiftly around you. What if you froze the motion for a minute and imagined the components that make up a city as individual pieces to the puzzle? What’s actually happening to them?’, he says.

Probably most of you are meanwhile familiar with Isaac Cordal’s miniature works that inspired many others to follow. We first introduced him in 2011 and thought it was time to re-visit his side and provide you with a little update of his latest works.

With the simple act of miniaturization and thoughtful placement, Isaac Cordal magically expands the imagination of pedestrians finding his sculptures on the street. The art work intends to catch the attention on our devalued relation with the nature through a critical look to the collateral effects of our evolution.
Isaac Cordal is sympathetic toward his little people and you can empathize with their situations, their leisure time, their waiting for buses and even their more tragic moments such as accidental death, suicide or family funerals.

The sculptures can be found in gutters, on top of buildings, on top of bus shelters; in many unusual and unlikely places in Barcelona, Nantes, Brussels, Berlin, London and many more, so keep your eyes open, you might just spot one.
