Jonas Edvard’s Myx Lamp, A Luminaire Grown From Mushrooms And Waste

The ‘Myx Lamp‘ by Danish product designer Jonas Edvard features an organic exterior grown from plant fibers and mushroom mycelium.

The lampshade takes approximately three weeks to create: Plant fibers and mushroom mycelium grow together to create a soft and flexible living textile designed in a cylindrical form. After two weeks, edible Oyster mushrooms are harvested from the exterior of the lampshade, the waste product that remains becomes the lamp; the lightweight material offers an organic, compostable and sustainable alternative to traditional design components. As Edvard explains, “The MYX consists of waste—the mushroom organism comes from a commercial mushroom farm and the plant fibers are leftover material from the textile industry.” Rather than ditching such waste products, Edvard is reimagining them as luminaires and creating new life (and food products) in the process.

PaulinePlusLuis’ Minimalist Venise Wall Lamp

Brussels-based lighting and home decor specialists PaulinePlusLuis has designed the Venise, a simple wall lamp inspired by the traditional Venetian blind.

Composed of a singular sheet of aluminum cut into slats, the Venise lamp is designed to mimic the way Venetian blinds allow sunlight to filter through windows. PaulinePlusLuis aimed to “reproduce the interaction between slats and sunlight” in Venise, making the lighting phenomenon tangible. Anodized aluminum sheets were lazer cut and twisted in order to create the slats. This malleable material was used for the entire lamp, making it truly minimalist in form. A light placed behind this facade shines through the gaps, creating a soft glow.
The arched top and iconic blind-style slats, which are so closely associated with everyday windows and blinds, give users a nostalgic feeling or sense of déjà vu. The designers hoped that this would help individuals to create, or recall, their own stories around the lamp. PaulinePlusLuis are inspired by “the shapes already belonging to our environment” and work with products that “refer to stories and moments”. Venise comes with no additional wiring or embellishments, so when hung on a wall, it really looks as if it could be a real window.

Swiss artist Carmen D’Apollonio is a studio potter, with part of her work focusing on the creation of ceramic lamps. As an art assistant to fellow Swiss-born artist Urs Fischer for over a decade, D’Apollonio has trained her sculptural eye, particularly that which understands essences of the domestic setting. Now, her own practice has evolved to present endearingly surreal lights of loosely figurative forms, which seem to melt and fall into themselves as if they each have their own character. D’Apollonio’s practice celebrates the fusion of craftsmanship and functionality, and as a lamp is switched on, a new quality of texture or colour is revealed.

Studio Fabian Zeijler Designs A Collection Of Lamps Inspired By Sun Gazing

Eindhoven-based Studio Fabian Zeijler designed a minimalist collection of lamps inspired by sun gazing that explore the displacement of light. Named “Sun Lights”, the lamps disperse a warm glow with a color gradient that mimics the light at sunrise and sunset through its circular disks made from acrylate. Paired with a dimmable LED light, the fixtures provide subtle mood lighting, in which the reflection of the material creates a sense of depth and texture. Both models of the “Sun Lights” series are available in many different color options.
