London-based, North Yorkshire-born photographer Danny Lowe focuses on portrait and fashion photography, featured in magazines such as Dazed & Confused and i-D. In collaboration with hair stylist James Oxley, Danny’s latest series titled ‘Self Identity’ shows a selection of black and white close-up shots of male models.
“Whenever I go out in London especially in East London, I am surrounded by creative people,” Danny explains. “You tend to see more openminded ideas here when it comes to fashion and style. That’s where I noticed how many different styles of haircut people have.”
Danny wanted to create visually interesting photographs with hair cuts as the main subject. All the young male models have an individual look and style, the hair cut sets people apart. The intention of these series was not to capture classic beauty models, but rather to show the close friendship and the strong family feel the photographer has with his models.

Michigan-based visual artist Yuni Kim Lang explores themes of weight, mass, accumulation, hair and cultural identity with her works. She created the project ‘Comfort Hair’ as a live sculpture inspired by the ‘Gache’, which is a big wig that was worn by Korean women who were of high social backgrounds back in the days. The bigger and heavier the wigs were, the more beautiful and aesthetic they were.

The artist states: “So powerful and beautiful yet so burdensome and heavy. It is this intense, overwhelming, yet so satisfying relationship with our hair that makes us obsess over it.”

Berlin-based designer Sybille Paulsen turns cut-off hair of cancer patients into custom pieces of jewellery. Her project ‘Tangible Truths’ enables women undergoing chemotherapy to wear their hair in a very different way.

The change that they are experiencing gets visible and their lost hair is transformed into something valuable and beautiful. Often her pieces evoke a conversation, offering the women she works with a new channel to express their feelings. It takes two weeks to create the jewelry and Paulsen takes that period of time to get to know each client a bit better.

This short series of Hair works by Gerwyn Davis is a series of self-portraits with the body obscured by a variety of both real and artificial hair sourced in Schöneberg.
It was created in his bedroom in Berlin last summer as an extension of his costume making work using abstract materials. Having previously worked primarily with recycled, industrial and waste materials, Gerwyn Davis was interested in experimenting with softer and more organic products to create a delicate approach to costuming.
