We have already featured 25th Century‘s ‘Formless’ series on iGNANT, but the artist duo never ceases to amaze us. This time, we were struck by another element of their ongoing ‘Visual Philosophies’ project, entitled ‘Deep Discovery’. In creating this series of GIFs, the artists intended to translate their personal philosophy into moving images. Through the exploration of the inner universe, 25th Century preaches being instead of having, and in doing so, nudges us closer to nature.

Lucas Ighile and Ayla El-Moussa, the creators behind the project, say: “Scientists and spiritual minds have told us for decades that the universe is within us. Since the odds of exploring outer space as an astronaut are not favorable, we have decided to explore the universe within us. As well as a place we know less about than the cosmos: the ocean.”

LA-based artist and prop builder Jedediah Corwyn Voltz created a range of miniature treehouses for succulents, cacti and bonsai trees. Entitled ‘Somewhere Small’, the series began as a side project – a way of using scrap wood, fabrics and other materials left over from Voltz’s building of miniatures for stop motion films. Now the project has taken on a life of its own, the artist states that he tries to “build structures that compliment the plant they’re living in, and grow with them.” Hand-made pottery, rugs, furniture and sculptures, as well as semi-precious stones, complement the houses to create a tiny world in each plant. “This is my way of bringing my love of geology into my work just a little bit.” Voltz says.

According to the photographer, the light in the images functions like “paint on a brush” with film as the canvas. The imaginative GIFs mostly depict scenes in the urban environment with a playful touch and question the viewer’s perception of reality. Speaking of the inspiration behind the series, Spinelli says: “Photography is the process of drawing with light, as its etymology implies: a compound of the greek words φωτός (phōtos) ‘light’ and γραφή (graphé) ‘representation by means of lines’ or ‘drawing’.”

His characters experience small everyday adversities, that everyone can comprehend and we’re just charmed by his drawings of a woman flashing at a man as he looks the other way, or an unfortunate schoolboy leaning over and having the full contents of his rucksack falling to the floor.

Besides his GIF art, you’ll find some more charming illustrations in his portfolio that are usually based on some thick linework and cartoon-like character along with a pastel colour palette.
