A graphic designer asked for a working space in her own garden, which was the starting point for Atelier Pam & Jenny by l’escaut architectures.

2/3 of the workspace lies beneath ground level in the style of the Hobbit house. In between a smooth green slope and the cuboid shape workshop building, there comes an element, which you can imagine to be a small English type courtyard with the stairs, comfortable to sit on. The end of the building towards this court fully opens, providing an access point and opportunity for generous light and garden views.
The roof whose level is uncommonly lower than eye level, becomes a true fifth façade, as the real function is also betrayed by the presence of a hidden glass opening among the grasses. This Zenithal opening gives additional light for the back of the interior space and creates a spectacular view toward the hornbeam hedge.

Serge Schoemaker Architects created a freestanding garden shed that functions as a study, guest accommodation and storage. A geometric form entirely clad in shingles, combined with the transparent corner and rotated siting at the rear of the garden lends the studio a distinct presence and identity.

The aim was to design a contemporary, well-crafted studio that fit with the traditional surroundings; the use of materials, detailing and exceptional craftsmanship in the construction play an important role in this project. Extending full-height over two facades, the largest window opens up the corner of the structure, its sharp lines forming a striking contrast with the irregular textured facade. The built-in furniture is composed of three linear elements: a floating table in front of the window, a long bench with drawers and a vertical cabinet. The careful attention to detail in the design and craftsmanship results in a cherished place for the family to retreat from the everyday.

Hidden at the bottom of a London garden, this glowing shed by British studio Weston, Surman & Deane was designed as a writing retreat for an author.

The inner facade of the Writer’s Shed is shingle-clad with a glazed sliding door that opens out to a covered veranda facing back towards the house. A cedar screen fronts the veranda and gaps between the narrow slats allow light to shine out at night. Tucked away behind the cedar frame are logs to be used in the wood burning stove that heats the shed, which sits on concrete paving slabs and leans against the gable wall. Oiled chipboard bookcases for the writer’s library fill the space around it and painted pine boards cover the floor. A reclaimed sink with garden taps and a brass splash back sits on one of the shelves. A large skylight in the asymmetric pitch roof above fills the workspace with natural light.
