Japanese art director, Yuni Yoshida has created a surrealist series in which collections of food appear to have been manually pixelated.

This division into pixels is not to disguise the identity of the pineapple, nor is it to split the image of the burger into colored particles for correct display or storage in digital format. Instead, Yoshida’s rendering of fruit, vegetable, and burger takes their organic forms and re-configures their colors in cubes, perfect in their repetition and size. Yoshida has developed quite a name for her surrealist work which frequently employs commonplace items or scenarios in subversive situations.

Originally from Turkey, conceptual photographer Sakir Gökçebag creates striking arrangements and installations with everyday objects. His photograpy series ‘Cuttemporary Art’ depicts meticulously sliced fruit and vegetables, laid out in striking, methodically-created displays. Through this, Gökçebag presents an interesting play on natural and manmade imagery. A contrast arises through the precision of Gökçebag’s cuts and the organic patterns visible on the surface of the watermelons, apples and green beans, presenting an unlikely geometric view of things supposed to be eaten. By capturing his patterned creations on light grey backgrounds similar to that of professional passport photography, the objects are almost completely removed from their context as food, instead reading as interesting shapes, forms and materials that have been manipulated by the hand of an artist.

Artist Blake Little covers individuals of varying ages, backgrounds, and body types in gallons of honey while being photographed, exploring the idea of ‘Preservation’ with stunning results. Little had the inspiration for the process in the course of another portrait series; it sprang from the specific narrative iconography of one story, but soon morphed into a broader obsession. As he describes ‘the honey has a way of diffusing the personal qualities of the subject often making them unrecognizable and democratizing the individual with universal iconic qualities.’

On the images it looks like his subjects were preserved in amber so he also chose the title ‘Preservation’ for his book that comes out in a few days. You can also view his works at Kopeikin Gallery in LA between March 7 – April 18, 2015.

We’ve already told you that we love brunch and people in other countries feel the same way though what they’re eating is often very different from our mid-day snack.

Photographer Andrea G.Portolés and illustrator Bea Crespo examine what people eat for brunch around the globe with their project ‘Brunch City’. The duo uses everything from bread crust to yogurt cups to display architectural landscapes and scenes relevant to the city’s character and quality. In Spain you would eat a slice of catalan tomato bread which they topped with Gaudi’s famed cathedral cut from paper, in Rome you’d eat a towering stack of gelato while and in Beijing you’d maybe have a bowl of rice. Each two weeks they release a new one of the collection on their brunchcity blog. Can you guess the cities?

Ever wondered what’s happening in the kitchen when you’re not looking? Benoit Jammes imagines potatoes, peppers, onions and eggs to coast through the kitchen with ease, kickfliping and nosegrinding on rolling pins and tableware. The series is called ‘Skitchen’, merging the words ‘skate’ and ‘kitchen’. Oddly enough, most of his subjects seem to be advanced in this sport, except for the the unfortunate tomato which makes a rather ungraceful landing, winding up as ketchup.
