In his recent series ‘The Circle and the Line’, Stockholm-based photographer Erik Östensson presents his viewer with subtle complexities in the setting of every day life. His poetic, performative images capture emotive interactions between people, objects and the landscape. In each image, all elements are somewhat intertwined and exist in harmony with one another, forming new relationships in materiality and form. “When looking at our surroundings, we fill it with our own notions. Without these simplifications, we would not be able to operate within the world’s complexity,” the photographer explains. “I want to create images where the viewer can see it all again. I do this by depicting objects from a new angle and by putting them in a new context. Past notions are replaced and the meanings of familiar objects expand.”

Based in Manhattan, fine art painter and photographer Trina Merry paints her models’ bodies, creating hyper realistic illusion so they blend into their surroundings. For her projects, Merry halts people, traffic, and even the police to create live painting performances on the street, documenting them with photography. The artist has expanded her camouflage series internationally, creating projects at the UNESCO Seven Wonders of the World. For her series titled ‘Sweet Land of Liberty’ she placed her painted models in front of famous settings in and around Washington D.C. To cover her models in full body camouflage, Merry brushes on a water-based body paint and uses an airbrush afterwards. The viewer’s eye is tricked by not seeing the differences between bodies and their surroundings. Merry wants to create the illusion by showing that the environment contains human emotions and memories.

Hailing from Wroclaw, Poland and now based in Australia, Agnieszka Chabros blends fine art, fashion and still-life influences in her images. The self-taught photographer prefers to shoot in analogue, as “it’s tangible, unique, laborious and thus more sophisticated and tempting to work with.“ Taking inspiration from sculptural shapes, the human body and plants, Chabros’ practice often centers around the human body, which she describes as being “in sync with nature, harmoniously unified with the organic world’s shapes and forms.” Her work has been shown in various solo and group exhibitions, and has been published in the likes of November, i-D and Oyster Magazine.
