Originally from Kentucky, photographer Ben Grieme currently lives and works in New York. Whilst studying photography in LA, Grieme found inspiration in the work of Larry Clarke and Nan Goldin, which led him to simplify the relationship between the camera and his subject. Channelling a ‘shoot what’s in front of you’ documentary approach, Grieme says he wants to “present an honesty in [his] work, whether it’s a portrait or a fashion editorial.” In this collection of images, both personal and commissioned projects, the photographer acquaints us with his laid-back, ingenuous style.

‘ISIS Maria’: A Homage To Fertility And Motherhood

‘Isis Maria’ is the first collaborative project by Brazilian fashion photographers Marcos Florentino and Kelvin Yule, as the collective MAR+VIN. Created for the online platform FFW, the editorial series is a modern interpretation of the Egyptian goddess Isis and the icon of Maria, representative of motherly virtue. In a homage to fertility, ancestry and endurance, the São Paulo-based creative duo capture model Loo Nascimento as an ethereal figure of female strength and regality. Styled by Suyane Ynaya, Nascimento is photographed in retro garments and settings symbolic of growth and protection, appearing against a backdrop of vegetation and carrying a newborn child. Through ‘Isis Maria’, MAR+VIN introduce a contemporary custodian of motherhood–a real woman, of divine status.

Based in New York City, photographer and film director Tyler Mitchell is best known for his high-end style editorial shoots and to rove about at Givenchy parties with NYFW models. Mitchell’s work is diversified and varies between hip-hop, fashion, and conceptual photography. As he traverses among these worlds, his eyes have been opened to the attractions and downfalls of working with musicians and models, he started to think about creating worlds of his own, and photography’s frictional relationship with the Internet. While many filmmakers and photographers credit Tumblr as their main source of inspiration, Tyler Mitchell finds his subjects in real-life experiences. “I haven’t given up on the reblog-ready stuff, it has its place, but I’m just trying to cut through to something real; I’m tired of everyone existing on their internet platform,” he says. That attitude of trying to make work that’s honest can be seen across all his pictures of his Personal series.

Italian photographer Marco Pietracupa focuses on portraying strong personalities with his signature flash-lit candor. After moving to Milan and studying fashion photography at the Istituto Italiano di Fotografia, Marco started to arouse enthusiasm for the Italian fashion scene. Best known for his flash-drenched pictures, numerous of Marco’s fashion editorials have been published by L’Officiel, L’Uomo, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Wallpaper and Rolling Stone. Marco’s off-the-cuff style speaks to the photographer’s instinctive process. “With photography I’m able to tell a story about a personal, intimate world, that tries to find common elements with the outside world,” Marco says. With his nude pictures, he likes to free the person from any possible stereotype and reference to fashion. Titled Shapeshifter, his newly published monograph features mostly unpublished archive images, showing how far Marco’s personal vision differs from his commissioned portraits of glossy celebrities. Marco’s art projects have been exhibited at Le Dictateur in Milan, Business Gallery in New York and Brownstone Foundation in Paris, among other galleries.
