During the quieter moments of the day, when model Sheena Liam is somewhere between travelling and photoshoots, she picks up her embroidery hoop and creates portraits of girls with flowing thread hair. The project has enabled Liam to explore her own taste for art direction, and each embroidered piece appears as an inventive contemporary approach to a traditional craft. Liam’s simple line drawings, created with a needle and thread, are layered with a technique of allowing the thread to sit loose against and beyond the canvas. This graces Liam’s work with another dimension, through the impression of flowing hair. The girls in each frame embrace this new possibility of interaction–they appear to be readjusting the thread, cutting it with tiny scissors and even dipping the ends in noodle soup. This endearing play with portraiture is explained by Liam as bringing “a certain sort of soul to the pieces.”

Iranian artist Maryam Ashkanian made a name for herself as a painter and sculptor. Her hand-sewn fabric art ‘Sleep Series’ has recently made an impression in the international art world. For this she chose the finest cloths as bases for pillows. On this collection of pillows, the artist embroidered portrayals of sleeping people. Ashkanian understands dreams as a way of entering a broader universe. In the given time frame sleeping people are observers, still gaining unique experiences. “Images of us in dreams are revealed in the right truest evidence; an original icon which introduces us to the peripheral world wildly“, states the artist. In 2012 she received the Bachelor of Art in painting at the Art Faculty of Gilan University in Iran. Ashkanian’s works are exposed in solo and group exhibitions internationally.

In the series ‘Self 1975-76‘, German artist Annegret Soltau created striking embroidered self-portraits by stitching a thread over images of her own face. It was the first project where Soltau used a needle and thread to draw over a photograph and this style has since become her hallmark. Her imagery, which is both provocative and disturbing, often explores themes related to the self, metamorphosis and the female body. Alongside other artists such as Cindy Sherman and Suzy Lake, Soltau’s work is regarded as a key reference point for feminist art in the 70s and 80s.

In an interview about her work, Soltau says, “Above all I am interested in the image of women. What happens to women these days, how do they present themselves? Which compulsions (and liberties) exist for women today?”

In a statement about his art, Romussi says: “I intervene images by applying my own perception of beauty to them. Sometimes by giving them a new identity or a different aesthetic concept, it’s a chance to give this image a new emotion, a new life, a new interpretation of beauty through embroidering.” We’ve published a series of his other works previously.

Textile artist Nike Schröder was actually the subject of our very first Work in Progress Feature back in the days and we’re very glad to introduce an update of her work and her life in the following post. She has moved to LA since and found a gallery which is currently presenting her second solo show called ‘inzwischen’.

The translation of the German word ‘inzwischen’ is ‘meanwhile’ or ‘since that time’ which appropriately references the underlying themes and subjects in the new work. Continuing on topics relating to World War II Germany, Schröder reveals hard to find images of male and female soldiers engaged in playful activity. The freedom and naïve instinctiveness of the nudity juxtaposes the harshness and reality of the war. The subjects are translated into stitched paintings using Schröder’s signature rayon threads with gouache and mixed media on canvas.

The second half of the show includes a variety of works that have been precisely installed within certain architectural elements of the gallery. A large grouping of porcelain faces with minimal white glaze and indistinctive black markings is installed with streams of threads coming out of their mouths symbolizing the use of language. The overall installation appears ghostlike with hues of neutral colors intentionally weighed down by the dark dye at the bottom edges creating a heaviness to the filigree character for the atmosphere.

Berlin-based photographer Anja Schäfer visited Nike Schröder at her home and workspace in LA. Take a look.

Singapore-based textile artist and illustrator Teresa Lim created the project ‘Sew Wanderlust’, an ongoing work to document her travels. It started in 2014 in Perth when she was at the beach and she wanted to take a photo of the sunset but her phone has ran out of battery. She only had her craft supplies with her and she thought that maybe it would be great to embroider the scene instead. That was how ‘Sew Wanderlust’ started.

In her own words, she says “Embroidering a place instead of taking a photo makes so much of a difference. When you take a photo of a place, you don’t notice the small details. But when you draw or embroider, your eye picks out so much more detail that you wont usually notice. And after I complete a piece, I feel like I actually know the place.”

US-based artist and photographer Diane Meyer has been working on a series of embroidered photographs taken in the city of Berlin. Sections of the photographs have been obscured by cross- stitch embroidery sewn directly into the photograph forming a pixelated version of the underlying image.

Diane Meyer states: “The images were taken in the city center as well as in the suburbs where I followed the former path of the Berlin Wall. I was particularly interested in photographing locations where no visible traces of the actual wall remain, but in which there are subtle clues of its previous existence. These clues include incongruities in the architecture that occurred as new structures were built on newly opened land parcels, changes in street lights or newer vegetation. In addition to the physical aspects that point to the former division of the city, I am interested in the psychological weight of these sites. In many of the images, the embroidered sections of the photograph represent the exact scale and location of the former Wall offering a pixelated view of what lies behind. In this way, the embroidery becomes a trace in the landscape of something that no longer exists, but is a weight on history and memory. As the embroidery takes the form of digital pixilation, I am making a connection between forgetting and digital file corruption. The embroidery emphasizes the unnatural boundaries created by the wall itself and provides a literal contrast to the concrete of the wall and a metaphorical contrast to its symbolism.

Jessica Wohl is a Tennessee-based trained illustrator, who is now working in the fields of drawing, painting, collage, installation and performance. Her work evolves around the concept of home and it’s residents. She proves that looks can be deceiving with the use of drawing and sewing on family based imagery and by that disorders these representations of domestic perfection and happiness.

In her series „Sewn Drawing“ she takes on embroidery to mask the characters on found photographs and digital prints and uses sewing to embody the metaphor of the human need to „keep it together“ and prevent life from „ripping apart at the seams“.

Using traditional tapestry techniques, Erin M.Riley weaves images of women in states of undress or exposure, personal objects or landscapes that are related to destruction and death. With her work, she is examining the honesty of sexuality but also how courtships, pornography and sex is changing as a result of the mass depiction of these intimate moments online.

The artist states: “My work is the culmination of research into addiction, sexual experimentation, popular internet culture, the effects of single parent households, socio-economic status’ etc. I am drawn to the images taken for private exchanges that become littered on the internet. I am using my own images that I have sent to lovers as well as the objects that I have formed psychological attachments to, objects that have impacted people’s lives, displays of arrests, deaths, addictions.”
