Alongside publishing independent photobooks as the co-founder of Same Paper studio, Yuan Xiaopeng spends time photographing street scenes of Shanghai. Captured with portrait orientation, the images gather a sense of the city’s multiple identities, channelled through the photographer’s keen eye for chance encounters with light and composition. The series presents views of Shanghai that may otherwise have slipped unnoticed, with Yuan Xiaopeng often pointing his lens in the direction of street corners, cracks in the surfaces and close-ups that render their subjects (at first) unrecognisable. As a viewer becomes familiar with Yuan Xiaopeng’s work, it can be discovered to arise with an interest in the subtly surreal or uncanny, hidden in plain sight of everyday Shanghai life.

After moving to Pittsburg couple of years ago, editorial and advertising portrait photographer Tom M. Johnson found a unique way to photograph the city and tell a story at the same time of the people working there.
On a December afternoon, as the turquoise sky surrendered to the city lights, Tom M. Johnson was struck by the isolation of a parking lot attendant sitting in his booth. Fascinated by this occupied booth, Johnson started with his project named “Pittsburgh Parking Lot Booths and Their Attendants”, capturing the isolation and melancholy of Pittsburgh parking lot attendants with nothing other than their thoughts. “I wanted to show an aspect of daily life in the city so steeped in the habits that people have forgotten what makes it interesting”, Tom M. Johnson explains. Pittsburgh is a commuter city with marginal public transportation, so most people have to drive into the city from surrounding suburbs and need a place to park. Tom M. Johnson photographs the attendants not as obscure structures, he takes their portraits as he sees them, as animate objects with a character shaped by years. These occupied booths seem like a portrait within a portrait and thus a story within a story. This project demonstrates the symbiotic relationship of both the booth and the attendant. The occupant needs the booth for comfort and function, while the booth needs its attendant for significance.

Since 2001, photographer Julie Renée Jones has been capturing places somewhere in between reality and figments of imagination. Taking the people and places of her American midwest home as a subject, the Ohio-born Jones explores memory and experiences of aging, a theme integral to her project ‘Umbra’. Many images of the series present figures concealed by shadows and foliage, their presence revealed in the frame through flickers of sunlight. Others depict naturally lit portraits but still some essence of identity remains hidden, alluding to the reconstruction and fading of memories. About the series, the photographer explains, “Using my own interpretations of everyday events, childhood games, the landscape of my home, and most importantly the photographs from my family archive I rewrite the perceived reality of my childhood and family’s past into new truths.”
