Most of Bertjan Pot’s experiments begin on the impulse of a certain curiosity, working with various manufacturers to explore the possibilities and push the limits. The ‘Masks’ series of the Dutch designer was initially the result of a materials experiment that started out in 2010, and has become an ongoing project. The idea was created by originally making a carpet, realizing that once the textile assembled, curves and shapes can be formed. The possibilities designing various masks are endless, using rope with bright colors that create extraordinary patterns. Each mask has its own color palette and style, some are more human, others are more animal, and some are very abstract. The handcrafted masks have both fetishistic and frightening connotations, seeming to tell stories. Studio Bertjan Pot works with manufacturers such as Arco, Established & Sons, Feld, Gelderland, Montis, Moooi and Nike.

French artist Marine Coutroutsios created paper artworks of Australian birds inspired by the beauty of nature that surrounds her.

Being born in Paris, she now calls Sydney her home and the move has had a huge influence on her creative work and how she sees the world today. By using paper and foam, the abstract and vibrant artworks document various species of birds like parrots, rosellas and wild cockatoos in the city.

Marine Coutroutsios calls herself a “paper artist” and states: “With my work I’d like to inspire and engage you to reconsider the value of your surroundings. I think beauty is everywhere and it’s a powerful source of energy.”

Artist Alejandro Duran collects bits of trash that washes up from locations around the world, transforming them into color-based, site-specific sculptures. Duran aims to create a harsh juxtaposition that draws attention to the global catastrophe of ocean pollution.

He states: “Over the course of this project, I have identified plastic waste from fifty nations on six continents that have washed ashore along the coast of Sian Ka’an. Conflating the hand of man and nature, at times I distribute the objects the way the waves would; at other times, the plastic takes on the shape of algae, roots, rivers, or fruit, reflecting the infiltration of plastics into the natural environment.

More than creating a surreal or fantastical landscape, these installations mirror the reality of our current environmental predicament. The resulting photo series depicts a new form of colonization by consumerism, where even undeveloped land is not safe from the far-reaching impact of our disposable culture.”

Anyone seen the 1999 hit high school romcom ‘Never Been Kissed’ starring Drew Barrymore? It’ about geeky Josie, who spent her high school years on the social outer-harassed and tormented by the cool kids. Cruelly nicknamed Josie Grossie, never invited to the prom and always the one left sitting alone on a chair at parties.

Italian-based creative studio Mathery imagined what it would look like if the party came to her. They created ‘Josie The Chair That Pops’, a performative chair that celebrates the person who is seated and moreover, celebrates design. Josie lives for the act of sitting down and responds with a joyous burst of colour.

Dawn Ng created the series ‘A Thing of Beauty’ as a bold celebration of the everyday and ordinary. She collected various objects in over 100 shops around Singapore and arranged them by color in beautiful still lifes.
As she explains each installation is meant to be ‘an anthropological documentary of things we collectively own in this day and age’ while the work aims to challenge common canonizations of what we find beautiful. We should rather hold on to objects that actually mean something to us or as the artist puts it, we should ‘see a bit of ourselves in the things we keep.’

Seoul-based artist Ilhwa Kim hand-dyes, cuts, and rolls thousands of sheets of Korean mulberry paper to form colorful, three-dimensional works of art that form vibrant patterns and shapes. The artist developed this nearly sculptural way of creating artworks using layers of paper, which she calls “seeds,” to make the surface and sense of her images change from morning to night.

Depending on the angle, distance and light situation, each of her pieces transforms in a constantly shifting wave of texture, dimensions, depth, and color while the viewer can spot subtle impressions of eyes, hearts, human figures, and more in the densely packed images.

We recently introduced you to Tumblr goddess, fashion icon and rainbow enigma Arvida Byström. The 22-year-old Swede has drenched the Internet with her glitter-covered vision of the world for most of her young life. We’re fascinated by her work and the fact that she isn’t afraid to be who she is and to do what she wants. Meanwhile she moved to London, where she works as a part-time artist, photographer, model and feminist with opinions about everything from body hair (she lets it grow) to monogamy.

Who likes Arvida Byström will loves this project she did together with photographer Valerie Phillips who is just as dope as Arvida herself. Since 2001 the New York-born fashion and documentary photographer explores what it means to be a teenage girl, capturing different girls at an important crux in their lives, publishing the resulting images in books and zines. Valerie’s works zone in on young women and reveal something about their journey to adulthood in nuanced tones. She published six books already, the latest entitled ‘hi you’re beautiful how are you?’ features Arvida Byström. You can find an interview with Arvida and Valerie here.

After we took a closer look at her Tumblr, we’d love to meet the LA-based illustrator for an interview as she seems super fun and talented. Jaya Nicely works on various commissioned works but she also brought personal projects such as “Real houses with made up stories”, a little zine of drawings of real houses paired with completely fictional families inhabiting them and the food-inspired Compound Butter Magazine into being.

Shooting mostly on a Mamiya RZ, Ayer’s work features a dreamy host of colors and moods. Light leaks, double exposures, solar flare, and other manipulations make the colors in his film bleed so majestically and form the spine of his work. You can see more of his amazing photography on his Flickr and Tumblr or purchase prints here.

San Francisco-based artist Peter Combe creates three-dimensional artworks out of confetti, that he stamps out of paint swatches and other everyday materials.

The artist states: “I am consumed by the subtle magic that occurs when playing with light, color and movement in my art making. These artworks transform and change subtly as the viewer shifts from his/her vantage point. There is a magic that occurs, a trick of the eye where color seems to occupy space – a void – at once ethereal, yet seen from another angle the whole appears as if a ghostly image, veiled in gossamer. It is these characteristics that propel me to experiment with the interplay of color, light and movement.” You can also follow the artist on Instagram.

Reto Whale is an illustrator living and working in LA, where she lives with her son, her husband and her two dogs that she often turns into subjects for her colorful works. As she states, she feels inspired by random oddities, movies and music that are funny or interesting, strange characters in her neighborhood, animals, family and friends.

She scribbles ideas in her sketchbook before she starts with the actual working process, that is very intuitive. Sometimes she colors her works after scanning them at the computer, other times she draws and paints them directly with sharpies, ink, acrylic and oil on paper or wood. Her aim is to make the viewer laugh with her quirky characters and stories. You can shop her prints here.
