Rebecca Szeto created the series ‘Paintbrush Portraits’, melting old brushes with miniature portraits. Tools that were once used to create artwork, now bear the faces of women inspired by the Renaissance period and other female figures of art history.

Szeto uses her skill and background to create playful objects that question our notions of beauty and value; trash and treasure. “The slow and repetitive nature of whittling becomes a meditative activity,” says Szeto. For her, the build-up of paint layers helps define their ultimate form, “the idiosyncrasies of each individual brush.”

For her project ‘Renaissance Brushstrokes’ photographer Romina Ressia created a set of classic portraits operated – without digital manipulation – but with brushstrokes which work as the link between two eras, and between the old and the contemporary. With her works Romina explores the similarities between tradition and modernism, between old and new, the common and the unknown. She aims to find out, how our past affects society nowadays and how other atemporal issues are managed today. It’s her way to examine how we’re touched by the changing world in which we live in.

As you can see in the last picture, Flora used a painted glass panel to create the visual effect, afterwards she just applied some color/toning effects, adjusted the contrast and a few skin retouch.
