French artist Marine Coutroutsios created paper artworks of Australian birds inspired by the beauty of nature that surrounds her.

Being born in Paris, she now calls Sydney her home and the move has had a huge influence on her creative work and how she sees the world today. By using paper and foam, the abstract and vibrant artworks document various species of birds like parrots, rosellas and wild cockatoos in the city.

Marine Coutroutsios calls herself a “paper artist” and states: “With my work I’d like to inspire and engage you to reconsider the value of your surroundings. I think beauty is everywhere and it’s a powerful source of energy.”

London based painter Amy Judd creates portraits of women full of beauty and mystery. Inspired by the enchanting relationship between women and birds that can be found in in traditional mythologies and folklores, she creates beautiful paintings featuring women covered in feathers or other natural elements. The owl is a recurring theme in her works that is somehow linked to the sensitive yet strong image of the female figure. In her imagery she uses feathers and other feminine items as symbols of strength, flight and bravery, rather than fragility. Amy Judd is exclusively represented by Hicks Gallery where you can find more of her works.

We’ve featured the work of fire painter Spazuk previously on iGNANT. Now he is back with his series ‘Ornithocide’ featuring live and dead birds juxtaposed with various manmade devices designed to kill. The works are a reaction to the heavy use of pesticides in North America and the consequential poisoning of insect-eating birds.

Like the classic ‘canary in the coal mine’, Spazuk reflects on the chocking population decline of insectivorous birds as a clear warning to humans that these toxins are making their way through the food chains and the natural cycles. Like a dark mirror, the death of millions of birds forces us to see the threat we pose to the planet and all living systems, including ourselves.

The bags twist, weave, and undulate in concert with each other creating a visual mesh of kinetic fluctuation. The digital creations reflect the idea of a land art installation, metamorphosing natural spaces through an artistic intervention.

Diana Beltran Herrera is a designer and artist that has been working over the past years with paper, creating fascinating, lifelike sculptures of all kinds of birds.

After graduating from her BA degree in industrial Design in 2010, Herrera realized that she wasn’t interested in pursuing a design practice as a life career, as she was more interested in the theories of understanding of nature and material as an element that exist around us and is present in an everyday routine. Just as the patterns found in nature, her sculptures comprehends massive groups of elements that together compose a major complex system.

Russian photographer Maria Ionova-Gribina created the series ‘Natura Morta’ to honor the dead animals she found during her summer bicycle rides. All of the animals pictured died of natural causes or car accidents and were found soon after their death.

The artist states: “During my childhood, me and my brother buried dead moles, birds or bugs that we found on the border of a forest. And we decorated the grave with flowers and stones. Probably it was a children’s curiosity, our first studies of mortality. In this project I work with my childhood memories and with the subject of life and death.”

We’ve already introduced you to Shaun Kardinal and his embroidery works in 2012. Now he’s back with his series called ‘Flying Formation’. He created digital collages from images he found on google and friends’ Facebook and Instagram Feeds that he would then exhibit on his own Instagram.

He states: “As a sort of durational performance, I posted the images over the course of two hours during Seattle’s First Thursday Art Walk. I got myself setup at a favorite bar where, lit blue by iPhone and Macbook, I posted an image. Every ten minutes, I composed another—using Instagram’s filters and editor to finish each piece.”
