Artist Jim Darling has taken the idea of an airplane window as frame, creating paintings that place the audience as passenger, showcasing vague yet nostalgic landscapes within his constructed airplane windows. He chose an aerial perspective to show cities, clouds and oceans seemingly drifting by the passenger’s seat while the occasional wing is appearing in the far edges of the painting.

The images give us that unique feeling that one encounters when sitting in a plane, damned to sit still, wait patently for the arrival and just enjoy the view and the world passing by out of this tiny little frame in a mix of serenity and excitement.

French artist Marine Coutroutsios created paper artworks of Australian birds inspired by the beauty of nature that surrounds her.

Being born in Paris, she now calls Sydney her home and the move has had a huge influence on her creative work and how she sees the world today. By using paper and foam, the abstract and vibrant artworks document various species of birds like parrots, rosellas and wild cockatoos in the city.

Marine Coutroutsios calls herself a “paper artist” and states: “With my work I’d like to inspire and engage you to reconsider the value of your surroundings. I think beauty is everywhere and it’s a powerful source of energy.”

Textile artist Nike Schröder was actually the subject of our very first Work in Progress Feature back in the days and we’re very glad to introduce an update of her work and her life in the following post. She has moved to LA since and found a gallery which is currently presenting her second solo show called ‘inzwischen’.

The translation of the German word ‘inzwischen’ is ‘meanwhile’ or ‘since that time’ which appropriately references the underlying themes and subjects in the new work. Continuing on topics relating to World War II Germany, Schröder reveals hard to find images of male and female soldiers engaged in playful activity. The freedom and naïve instinctiveness of the nudity juxtaposes the harshness and reality of the war. The subjects are translated into stitched paintings using Schröder’s signature rayon threads with gouache and mixed media on canvas.

The second half of the show includes a variety of works that have been precisely installed within certain architectural elements of the gallery. A large grouping of porcelain faces with minimal white glaze and indistinctive black markings is installed with streams of threads coming out of their mouths symbolizing the use of language. The overall installation appears ghostlike with hues of neutral colors intentionally weighed down by the dark dye at the bottom edges creating a heaviness to the filigree character for the atmosphere.

Berlin-based photographer Anja Schäfer visited Nike Schröder at her home and workspace in LA. Take a look.

Artist Susanna Bauer creates incredible fragile leaf sculptures, turning leaves into cubes, tunnels, and geometric patterns.

She states: “There is a fine balance in my work between fragility and strength; literally, when it comes to pulling a fine thread through a brittle leaf or thin dry piece of wood, but also in a wider context – the tenderness and tension in human connections, the transient yet enduring beauty of nature that can be found in the smallest detail, vulnerability and resilience that could be transferred to nature as a whole or the stories of individual beings.”

Bauer currently shows an exhibition at Lemon Street Gallery in Cornwall, England through June 27th, and you can see more of her works over on Facebook.

San Francisco-based visual artist Travis Collinson’s drawing and paintings investigate portraiture, perception and his own subtle yet complex observations. His works are both, absurd and abstract while his subjects often seem to suffer from some kind of depression, lying on the floor with their eyes wide open, staring vacantly at the walls. Working from personal photographs and sketches derived from a process of automatism, Collinson selectively couples elements from each, reinterpreting them at a larger scale. Adding a skewed perspective and distortion of unassuming subjects, objects and environments, the artist’s compositions are at once familiar and enigmatic.
