Made of bamboo, cotton and 8,000 sheets of rice paper, Zhu Jinshi’s ‘Boat‘ is a monumental installation suspended from the ceiling and stopping just before the ground. Chinese artist used Xuan paper, a material infused with Chinese history and tradition. Encouraging the visitors to take a walk through the 12-meter installation, Jinshi not only shows a symbolic representation of a boat, but also refers to the notion of a journey. Reminiscent of a spherical tunnel, the artwork reflects Jinshi’s journey from east to west, while simultaneously paying homage to the dead’s passage from living to the afterlife. Walking through the paper tunnel becomes a spiritual experience – while the material dulls the noise and light of the outside world, the visitors start to perceive the tunnel as a representation of a boat’s journey, the drift between the cultures and worlds.

Paris-based architects Berger&Berger completed an extension to the museum housing Yvon Lambert’s contemporary art collection in Avignon, France. Originally a duo of 18th-century French mansions, Berger&Berger designed three windowless spaces to connect and expand the original houses, including a white concrete and marble atrium boasting a spiral staircase. Light filters down through a circular skylight framed by circular fluorescent tubes. Speaking of the vision behind the design, the architects say, “The project joined geometric spaces and varying atmospheres […] The ensemble includes spacious galleries infused with natural light from the historical architecture and artificially lit abstract galleries that correspond more to the ‘white cube’ of big modern museums.”

The work of the Swiss based sculptor and digital creative Fabian Bürgy deals with manipulation. His diverse and playful artistic practice, which is a mix between sculpture, installation and digital imaging, explores the aesthetic of things through random encounters of objects, materials and misplaced situations.

Bürgy creates conceptual interventions which are inspired by a wide range of mundane objects – from holes, clouds and skid row textures to suicide belts and even dog tails, all subjected to what could be described as his slightly violent and disturbing process of transformation, misplacement and dysfunction of things. He takes specific thoughts and develops conflicts with precise and minimalistic means – an oeuvre, which constantly explores the point where known things become something else, where metamorphosis is reached or a particular condition is repealed.
