Designed by Wertel Oberfell for MGX by Materialise, the Fractal Table was born from the studies on fractal growth patterns. Found in nature, they can be also described with mathematical algorithms, joining grown and organic nature with structured and mathematical quality. Per definition, a fractal is a fragmented geometric shape that can be split into parts, each of which being a reduced-size copy of the whole. Produced as a single piece in epoxy resin, Fractal Table pushes the manufacturing process to its limits, both in terms of size and complexity. Its structure is based on treelike stems that grow into smaller branches until they get very dense towards the top to form a quasi-surface. To achieve this unique effect, the designers used various CAD programs. Apart from being visually impressive, the project takes into account also such aspects of design as stability and usability.

Unseen Art Project is an initiative that designs 3D-printed classical paintings that enable the visually impaired to experience art through touch. Unlike masterpieces hung behind a barrier, these artworks are more accessible because you can actually feel them with your hands. Currently, the team behind Unseen Art Project is running a Kickstarter campaign to recruit artists to reproduce classical art with 3D printing.

On the process behind it, one of the team members says in an interview: “The artist starts with a high-resolution scan or photograph of the painting, and then creates an interpretation of the work using 3D tools running on their computer. The artist aims to create depth in the art to make it easier for the hands to feel. Some details may be brought forward, and some may be simplified to highlight an impression of the painting.” See the video below to get a glimpse into the process.
