“A day will come when all nations on our continent will form a European brotherhood … A day will come when we shall see … the United States of America and the United States of Europe face to face, reaching out for each other across the seas,” proclaimed Victor Hugo at the International Peace Congress in Paris in 1859. He was laughed at for his dream, but history proved that he wasn’t too far from what reality could achieve.

We love plants, so when we discovered Labofem, a shop owned by Istanbul-based plant enthusiast Fem Güçlütürk, we had to pay a visit. mb! Magazine took a tour to the intoxicating rush of colours, sounds and smells of the Turkish metropolis.

With the uncanny grace of a dancer, Istanbul flits between tradition and today – here, contemporary art galleries rub shoulders with historic tea rooms and both towering high-rises and elaborately embellished minarets make up the city’s jagged skyline. The sheer size of the place takes our breath away – a populace of 15 million makes Istanbul the world’s fourth largest city.

Yet it takes a second, longer glance to discover Istanbul’s genuine charm – a charm born between winding alleys and picturesque roof terraces. To find the top spots, mb! teamed up with a local: Artist and illustrator Ceyhun Güney promises special glimpses of a city caught between two continents.
