Located on a cliff edge where the land meets the sea in Coquimbo, a port city in Chile, is a unique holiday home designed by Elemental Architects, titled ‘Casa en Los Vilos’.

The radically-designed residence is comprised of three intersecting concrete volumes that function as different living spaces. The horizontal volume hosts the living and dining area, featuring floor-to-ceiling glass windows with panoramic views of the ocean; the vertical upright volume accommodates four bedrooms and bathrooms, and a third angular volume leans against the vertical one, acting as a chimney for when fires are lit inside. The facade of the house reflects the weather-beaten landscape that surrounds it: the grey timber panelling was left to age like the rocky nature of the cliff-edge that it stands on. According to lead architect Alejandro Aravena, the design of the house was conceived as “pure and primitive”. The home is part of the Ochoalcubo project—a series of ground-breaking architectural residences designed by leading Chilean and Japanese practices.

Architecture studio Felipe Assadi created ‘Casa Bahia Azul’, a concrete house on the Chilean Coast that functions as a painter’s studio. Working alongside Francisca Pulido and Alejandra Araya, the architects designed a rectangular structure that is embedded into the hillside and features a large floor-to-ceiling window facade for inspiring views of the sea. Additionally, the remote artist studio can only be entered via a narrow staircase, since the architects’ goal was to “leave the user in complete isolation”.

The architecture studio of Felipe Assadi constructed a transportable cottage which is the prototype of a modular housing project. It’s located in the remote area of Pichicuy in Chile and its signature shape consists of two glass fronts facing nothing but nature. But what is even more interesting is how the house is set up: three bedrooms, two bathrooms and one living room are build from four identical modules of 3,5 x 6 meters. The used materials are iron and pine wood in both exterior and interior. The house is mounted on metal pillars previously arranged in a regular pattern, so that the installation of the modules could even be decided on the ground.

The module measures are determined by the maximum width and height which can be transported on the road without police escort, so that the entire design is derived from these limitations. The architects say: “The project aims to enable the user to configure their own home based on modules and a system that allows connections between these capsules without further instructions.”
