New York based Motion Artist Sam Cannon specializes in creating surreal and experimental animated GIF images. Her interest in GIF animation started during her time at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where Cannon studied both photography and videography, although neither medium really appealed to her. “I liked the space between still and moving images and trying to explore that space which is why I got into GIFs.” Her personal work focuses on the manipulation of time, space, and the human form, altering its shape and adding elements to create experimental imagery. Living somewhere between still photography and video, her images explore the way we interact with never-ending moments in a 15 second clip. It takes a serious amount of work to create these unique GIFs, while a basic looping GIF can be produced more simply. Cannon’s heavily edited images require lots of attention to craft. This dreamlike and mesmerizing state can only be reached by editing and retouching every single frame of animation.

In early 2016, the studio released geist.xyz, a series of ‘synthetic ghosts’ choreographed to result in ‘meandering layers of style changes.’ Speaking of the concept behind the project, ZEITGUISED explains, “What looks at first glance as an eccentric tangle of simulated dance and a color-coordinated Tumblr exploration turns out to be a study of handcrafted algorithmic textiles and procedural surfaces presented in and for what we call exquisite realities.”

Tomorrow evening, ZEITGUISED and renowned textile designer, Nadine Goepfert will be presenting the intriguing fruits of their digital textile design collaboration in Berlin in a presentation titled ‘contre/fait‘, hosted at Atelier am Moritzplatz, Berlin from 18:00 onwards. Speaking about his creative process, Pizurny says: “I just play with object in 3D, giving it characteristics which it doesn’t have in reality, wondering what happens, until it looks interesting.”

We have already featured 25th Century‘s ‘Formless’ series on iGNANT, but the artist duo never ceases to amaze us. This time, we were struck by another element of their ongoing ‘Visual Philosophies’ project, entitled ‘Deep Discovery’. In creating this series of GIFs, the artists intended to translate their personal philosophy into moving images. Through the exploration of the inner universe, 25th Century preaches being instead of having, and in doing so, nudges us closer to nature.

Lucas Ighile and Ayla El-Moussa, the creators behind the project, say: “Scientists and spiritual minds have told us for decades that the universe is within us. Since the odds of exploring outer space as an astronaut are not favorable, we have decided to explore the universe within us. As well as a place we know less about than the cosmos: the ocean.”

According to the photographer, the light in the images functions like “paint on a brush” with film as the canvas. The imaginative GIFs mostly depict scenes in the urban environment with a playful touch and question the viewer’s perception of reality. Speaking of the inspiration behind the series, Spinelli says: “Photography is the process of drawing with light, as its etymology implies: a compound of the greek words φωτός (phōtos) ‘light’ and γραφή (graphé) ‘representation by means of lines’ or ‘drawing’.”
