Ana Coto is a 22 year old Cuban-American artist based in Los Angeles. Working under the premise that energy is corresponded to color psychology and that, colors are associated with feelings and some are said to influence our mood. Her latest photographic project ‘Spilt Milk’ meant simply to create a visual representation of the above, during which each splash is different than the one before. Maybe Ana was trying to find something special among every-day environments. In any way, what we do know is that her photos have brought color to the ordinary and her work was captured flawlessly with the skill of someone who truly understands her craft.

Ariko Inaoka is a Japanese photographer who has been documenting the story of two sisters growing up in Iceland; their first loves, lies and secrets. The identical twins girls, Erna and Hrefna, are sensual, fiercely proud, aloof. They are spirited, independent, off in a dream world of their own.
Ariko as another storyteller supplies us with the vivid details of their shared childhood experiences and their gradual growing apart and is shooting them since they were only nine years old in 2009, while the project will be ongoing untill they reach the age of sixteen years old. Ariko’s intentions are to capture their own coming of age experiences, whatever that may mean. We can tell the project of these intertwined lives will create a certain nostalgia of the declaration of these once young girls in love with life itself.

Hye-Ryoung Min is an up and coming photographer hailing from Korea. In Korea they have a saying: ‘naughty 7 years old’. Realizing that there was a real interest in the secretive seven year old girl world, Hye-Ryoung resolved to take pictures of one.

So, she started photographing her niece, Yeonsoo and the authenticity of her project brought her much-deserved success, naturally. She describes the whole process as a fragile journey to the life of a most unpredictable and sensitive child, into her relationship with those around her – although they remain unseen in the photographs – and also to her own childhood. In other words, Min’s images reflect time beyond the moments captured in the pictures. The works of hers struck us the first time we looked at them, and they have only grown since.

Vibrancy, fun and quirkiness is what Alexandra Citrin’s work embodies, focusing on colour and shape over details to give a spontaneous, loose feel to her illustrations. She caught our eye with her absolutely superb project in which she illustrated some of the Paravion Press titles. What we love about Alexandra’s style is how she’s not afraid to show of all her workings-out and genuinely beautiful sketches, which when pieced together tell a pleasing story of colour and they create characters immortalised on paper. So without further ado, here’s the woman herself to tell us a little about her own distinctive minimal yet highly expressive visual language – one definitely to watch!

How do you feel today?

How does your current workplace look like?

Describe your daily routine.

What’s your secret passion?

What’s your favorite dish?

Your latest genius purchase?

Who’s your childhood hero?

How do you picture us?

Michele Bressan is a visual artist working with photography and film, who since 1993 is based in Bucharest, Romania. In his ‘Familiar Views’ series he shoots like he’s filming a short documentary of houses, and rooms from his local area. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of his photographs is the timelessness of the setting; the small rooms are depicting their own space and most importantly they are sensitively composed. All in all, Bressan’s images paint a charming portrait of a kind of anachronistic life, a key element for aesthetic appeal.

When missionaries and traders began to push European dress upon the Namibian people, they rebelled, using cattle-horned headdresses and explosively colorful gowns to project their proud identities.

Jim Naughten is a photographer based in London. His book, Conflict and Costume, was released in March by Merrell. In his photography series, Naughten portraits the ‘Herero people’ aka today’s remaining nomadic tribes — Naughten, set against a country of contrasts and paradoxes, Namibia that he describes as being ‘one of unforgiving intensity but also of silent witness’, subsequently let the past to speak. For him the Herero story, illustrated by the amazing costumes and uniforms, is one of survival, pride and defiance, provide the Conflict and Costume significance — the images haul at something deeper (pride, strength and a wonderfully unique sense of fashion).

Context and materials are two important elements in Amélia Desnoyer’s approach to design. Disturbing their inherent limits guides her to create new shapes which implies new experiences for the user. Sugar is a basic cooking product, it is a solid material, which can be transformed into a liquid and back to a different solid again. The transformation of this eatable product opens possibilities for experimenting ephemeral shapes and designs. Looking at the glass industry, she decided to put in parallel the technique of glass blowing and sugar casting to create a new object: a sugar glass which melts in contact with water and becomes a drink. Materials, shapes, colors and flavours are confronted, the association result in a new experience of drinking.

Erik Mowinckel lives in Oslo, and makes most of his work there, on walks or with friends. He is at the moment applying for art schools and working on ideas for a book. Photography, for him, is based on the joy of discovering something; getting the feeling that ‘this is something I can use, this is of value’ without really knowing what he can use it for, besides getting that feeling and hopefully communicating it in the photograph.

The blooming creative industry of Serbia, where it seems that has been a big amount of creative chaos lately, has given us one more photographic talent aka Marija Strajnic. In a bid to reconnect her architecture knowledge to their photography landscape, Marija Strajnic´s work, delicate and raw in the same time, is a clear and effective reminder that we are never far from subtle emotions and chosen encounters. The Serbian photographer cleverly frames with an unusual perspective everyday life moments, which are trying to reveal some kind of truth about the world. In these series she tends to provoke emotional exaggerations to the viewer through metaphorical visual narratives. Finally, she enjoys putting photographs together into intimate stories on her website.

London-based artist, Mr. Bingo, is an eternal naughty schoolboy that provoked numerous times our attention. “I will send an offensive postcard to the first person to reply to this message,” he tweeted one drunken night back in 2011 and thus, a new Internet art project, aptly titled Hate Mail, was born. The response was overwhelming, so he realized that people really wanted to be offended by post. He then opened a service on his website, where strangers could pay for an anonymous offensive postcard. Nowadays, the widely received service opens sporadically and for only a few minutes at a time because the demand is so high. These offensive and skillfully drawn postcards can be sent to solicitors or friends. Recently Mr. Bingo launched a book, filled with the abhorrent witticisms that make the project great.

Brian Vu is a photographer and collagist currently living and working in Brooklyn, NY. He grew up in Orange County, CA and began shooting photos in high school as a way to capture his friends. Collage came a couple years ago by accident. Surprisingly after all these years, it’s still crazy that he´s here pursuing it. The main themes in his work are life and death, religion/beliefs, and distortions of perception. He is currently working with a couple clothing brands to put his collages out on t-shirts. He´s also going to be published for the first time in a contemporary art book contributed by today’s up and coming collagists. Himself doesnt really have much planned. He´s just trying to create more work and reach as many people as he can with it. Check his collages on his portfolio site.

So we’d like to introduce Brad Downey, a visual artist adorning public streets with his sculptural installations. Strongly influenced by Duchamp, Downey’s approach relies on imminence visual communication and is playing against our everyday outlooks. From Dadaism to minimalism, he is a bright example of a modernist sculptor, whose works dive deep into the anarchy of the 21st-century globalized cities. His road works last as long as officials care to allow and occasionally, the nature of the materials he uses. For example, the spectacle we gawked at the street of Berlin in 2011, a square-shaped salami, camouflaged against a paved street flooring until a dog wolfed it up. With some nostalgia and clues of good humor Downey’s work rebels against the obsessions that govern public spaces. Obviously we could write a really long essay about Downey but we are sure the pictures will tell a lot more…

The project ‘Screen Lovers’ comes from a photo book of iconic movie couples of the same name. The images are all romantic, sexually charged film stills throughout movie history. ‘As I looked through them, I really wanted to see them come together, touch lips, make love, whatever comes next, so I started folding them into one another’, states Eli Craven the artist behind them. Craven is an American artist, whose work explores the role of images in processes of socialization through photography, found imagery, sculpture and collage. However, he creates pictures and objects that suggest something tangible behind the surface of a photograph itself. By gathering imagery from collected magazines, books, his personal history, and with a delicate blend of humor and melancholy, they are reconfigured to interrogate the ostensible values of the original.

Taking nature as his basis, Kaspar Hamacher is focused resolutely on physical rather than conceptual design. As he says himself, he feels more craftsman than designer. The things he can do with wood appeals to the imagination: whether it is a tree stump or a piece of leather, the key is authenticity in every step of his design process. Hamacher’s working method always results in a unique, personal piece. A piece of design with a deeper meaning; with a soul. His work is somewhere inbetween art and design.

Photographer Erika Svensson -with obvious relevancy for her Swedish descendants- is a creative polymath mainly wielding a camera. Her images add a bit of extraordinary light & color magic in the blend. Erika can turn every subject, from cute candid shots of children to awkwardly timed portraits of grown-ups, and mystic landscapes, far more haunting. With photographs that provoke a purely visceral reaction, there’s something melancholic about her works, but also there’s something that reads as very pure to us, as in a very emotional way.
