‘Thrice Removed’ is the name of a photography book and project by British photographer David Stewart, which developed from David’s personal observations of relationships in families, society and life in general, featuring a series of somehow inter-related characters. Even though these picture often seem rather dark, there always is an underlying, essentially British humor that can be seen in the details, revealing more and more, the closer you look at it.

David shoots with a large format camera using 8×10 film without any help of Polaroid or any other instant digital image. That usually equals in a more staged or unnatural result, but in the case of Thrice Removed leaves the viewer to decide whether they are looking at a captured moment, a staged set up, or something more surreal.

Surrounded by a lake, a stream and a street, the irregular building site on which the „Screen House“ was built on presented several setbacks to keep in mind while planning for Canadian architect Alain Carle. The aim was to block the view into the house from the street and enhance the sight onto the water both from inside the house and the street. The architect created a sort of “hinge space”, a little courtyard connecting the two axes of the house, and almost acting like screen that brings the lake into sight for passers-by.

The material language follows a concept of layers with an exterior of bricks painted in black. Cedar paneling on exterior terraces works as cutouts for this dark envelope and continues into the ceilings of the living areas where white objects like a staircase and big furniture pieces are used to frame these different spaces.

‘Israeli Girls’ is an exploration of beauty ideals by Tel Aviv-based photographer Dafy Hagai, originally published as a zine and soon to be published as a book with the same title. Influenced by teen film directors and Americana photographers she takes these inspirations and translates them into local aesthetics and her own minimalistic, color-coded and graphic visual language.

For Dafy, it’s important to create real moments when capturing her subjects: “My models are people I can relate to, and my locations are somewhat the same. I look for places I have an emotional connection with, either aesthetically or mostly, nostalgically.”

Built on a lot surrounded by neighboring houses and a parking space, Japanese ALTS Design Office had to find an extraordinary solution for securing privacy and still find a way to let natural light into the Kusatsu House, located in Shiga, Japan.

They came up with a residential home based around a high, concrete wall without windows that not only offers the needed privacy, but also creates an internal pathway, covered by a large skylight that’s naturally lighting the ground floor. The rest of the house was created around this alley and relaxation area featuring an open living space with elements of timber and additional spots of rocks and greenery to create an almost natural environment without direct views to the outside.

In this ongoing series, Acacia travels the deserted areas of Alaska and Iceland by foot and presents a landscape dominated by strong contrasts and fleeting elements. It’s a reflection upon the combination of wonder, fear and respect that nature can invoke in its inhabitants. “Polaris, the North Star, functions as a metaphor for the constancy of magic that I perceive in an environment that is otherwise in constant flux.”

Sixteen years after founding his own graphic design agency in 1995, Singapore-based artist Keng Lye decided to leave the design industry behind and focus on his own art – especially his breathtaking and hyperrealistic pieces comprised of synthetic resin and acrylic paint.

Each piece takes about four to five days to make, pouring a layer of resin into a container, covering it up to protect it from dust, painting a layer of acrylic, let the paint dry, adding another layer of resin and repeating it over and over again until the fish, turtle or octopus is completed. While patience is definitely needed to create these artworks, Keng Lye believes in the serenity his aquatic animals embody and wants them to transfer that calmness onto its viewer.

Japanese architects Sugawara Daisuke tackle their four features of urban housing – small building sites, diverse styles of living, endlessly updating townscapes and artificial thermal environments – with their so-called ‚Transustainable House’ located in Chofu, Tokyo.

The house is separated into private rooms and common grounds in-between them with additional semi-indoor grounds created by placing frosted glass walls around the site, changing the inhabitant’s spatial reception. This layout of space does not only adapt to different living arrangements, but also offers four varying types of air condition: high indoor, mid indoor, mid outdoor and uncontrolled.
Each and every building also influences the look of his surroundings and, especially in Tokyo, they are changing at a fast rate. The façade if the Transustainable House is partly made of plaster mixed with iron and raw metal and is going to rust when exposed, offering continuous change on it’s exterior.

Our Insta Fav #83 is Young Mee Rim, a student living in Copenhagen, Denmark. Whenever her studies allow it, she loves to leave the city behind and explore the breathtaking landscapes of the country she lives in. Her Instagram feed, where she is known as @halfgirl, is filled with images that make us want to pack our bags and find unknown places in the countryside, outside the municipal borders.

Find out more about Young in the following Q&A and don’t forget to marvel at her feed.

Follow: @halfgirl

Where are you from? How does that place influence the way you photograph?
I’m from Denmark and have lived in Copenhagen for almost ten years now. I’ve only in recent years started to find Denmark really interesting, I think because I’ve always travelled abroad with my family and never really much within our own borders. As I’m discovering all these wonderful places in the countryside I feel a greater belonging to this tiny place, which just makes me more comfortable and relaxed – I see places and fall in love with them and that’s when they start to get photographable to me, if that makes sense.

InstaFav_Halfgirl_2 InstaFav_Halfgirl_3 InstaFav_Halfgirl_4

What are your favorite environments to shoot in?
I prefer the countryside, being surrounded by nature and natural light. Living in the city sometimes limits the amount of photos I take during the week, and when I’m not traveling I mostly do interiors, food or schoolwork stills.

InstaFav_Halfgirl_5 InstaFav_Halfgirl_6

What are the strengths of shooting primarily mobile? How does this affect your imagery?
I don’t mind admitting that I prefer to carry as little around with me as possible – lugging around an SLR seems like an overkill to me, now that I’ve gotten so used to just using my iPhone. It’s light, easy to use and I need it with me anyway. I’m not sure it’s affected my imagery, but it has definitely changed the way I’m using my imagery and viewing other people’s photography. I almost never sit down at my computer anymore, where I used to spend hours and hours every day browsing through website portfolios, blogs and tumblrs to find inspiration. Although I still shoot a lot of analogue, I find myself updating my blog less and less – it’s just not on my mind anymore, even if I still enjoy looking at beautiful photography on a larger scale than my mobile screen.

InstaFav_Halfgirl_7 InstaFav_Halfgirl_8 InstaFav_Halfgirl_22

Who and what are the things that inspire you?
I’m studying Natural History Conservation at the moment, so obviously nature is on my mind a lot. I try to visit places that have interesting/beautiful natural environments and find myself spending less and less time in cities.

InstaFav_Halfgirl_11 InstaFav_Halfgirl_12 InstaFav_Halfgirl_13

Favorite instagrammers?
@annettepehrsson because the light and seemingly effortless simplicity in her photos just convey so much emotion – I always love her images and have been a fan of hers even before Instagram.
@benjaminhole because his portrayal of farm life makes me want to give up everything, move to the English countryside and become a farmer.

InstaFav_Halfgirl_14 InstaFav_Halfgirl_15

Tell us a little about your everyday.
My days are pretty busy with school work, so I don’t get to leave the city as much as when I have time off, but I do try to get out as much as possible. I love having dinner with my friends and family, and wish I had more time to spend just hanging out!

InstaFav_Halfgirl_16 InstaFav_Halfgirl_17 InstaFav_Halfgirl_18

Which Apps do you use to edit your pictures?
I only use VSCO Cam, and have recently started using the new and improved Instagram tools as well. I kind of miss the days where you just slapped an Instagram-filter directly on your photos without any editing, because it was a much more real-time and direct feel. I try to keep the process as short and easy as possible to be able to upload as soon as possible, but I must admit my feed is mostly latergrams.

Paweł Fabjański is a visual artist and photographer based in Poland. While most of his professional work is commercial, he likes to experiment with more abstract ideas for his personal portfolio. In his series ‘Untitled’ in cooperation with set designer Zuza Słomińska, Paweł uses the temporarily empty facilities of Lodz university as his playground, just moments before they were filled with people trying to push their ideas a step further.
This emptiness is a contrast to the captured objects built of everyday items like cups and pencils. They seem like scribble notes turned into real life objects and are a metaphor for the creative compulsion, that Paweł believes lives in every single one of us.

Shown in a much more interesting way than a simple list, all of the needed ingredients for a meal are captured mid-air in the right proportions, almost like floating in a state of weightlessness. These images, while giving an infographic-like feeling and arising a pleasant anticipation, still offer the cook freedom to use their own imagination when it’s time to arrange their own, home-cooked meals.

Jessica Wohl is a Tennessee-based trained illustrator, who is now working in the fields of drawing, painting, collage, installation and performance. Her work evolves around the concept of home and it’s residents. She proves that looks can be deceiving with the use of drawing and sewing on family based imagery and by that disorders these representations of domestic perfection and happiness.

In her series „Sewn Drawing“ she takes on embroidery to mask the characters on found photographs and digital prints and uses sewing to embody the metaphor of the human need to „keep it together“ and prevent life from „ripping apart at the seams“.
