The second restaurant by young Dutch restaurateurs Lode van Zuylen and Stijn Remi in Berlin is ‘Remi’: a contemporary venue serving modern European cuisine, inspired by the eateries the pair used to visit in their home country, the Netherlands.
The restaurant’s anticipated opening adds to the city’s thriving food scene. It follows the duo’s inaugural restaurant Lode & Stijn—which opened its doors in Kreuzberg in 2016—and if the caliber of this first venue is any indication, ‘Remi’ will no doubt uphold their pair’s impressive standard. The interior was designed by local firm Ester Bruzkus Architekten together with the long-standing friends who attended culinary school together a decade ago. “For Remi, we were inspired by the Grand Cafés of our home country, where we have enjoyed eating together in the past. We wanted to create a place where people could meet in a relaxed atmosphere, with simplicity and good products; dishes that are uncomplicated and fun to eat,” Stijn Remi says.
The venue is characterized by an open kitchen at its center, with exposed concrete, high ceilings, and large-format glass fronts on both sides of the restaurant. Features include a bar made of deep red granite and an oversized light sculpture under the ceiling, underscoring the pared-back interior design. Daily changing lunch dishes include gazpacho with marinated cucumbers and mackerel with kohlrabi salad. In the evening, the focus is on seasonal dishes that can be combined into a four-course menu: a summer salad with peas and lovage, cod with fennel and grilled peppers, and choux à la crème for dessert. As always, the focus is on high-quality products, locally sourced from nearby producers and farmers.
