In remote and mountainous regions of the United Kingdom, it is not uncommon to happen upon bothies—basic dwellings left unlocked, available for travelers to shelter in at no cost. Over several years, English photographer Nicholas JR White documented the culture around these sites for his project, ‘Black Dots’.

White’s photographs capture the majesty of the United Kingdom; from the sublime mountains of the Scottish Highlands to England’s vast and beautiful Lake District and the peaks and rivers of Eryri in Wales. Dotted throughout these spectacular landscapes are bothies; far from civilization and accessible only by foot, they offer a place for respite from the natural world. Drawn to the primitive beauty of both the shelters and the wild countryside they sit within, White determined to explore the culture that surrounded them. ‘Black Dots’ is the culmination of three years spent traversing some of the most remote parts of the British Isles, photographing both bothies and the people that visit them.
